Adrien Brody's recent Best Actor award at the 97th Academy Awards for his performance in The Brutalist has fueled a new controversy regarding artificial intelligence (AI) ethics in Hollywood. The application of AI-based voice-cloning technology to perfect actors' performances has raised eyebrows regarding authenticity, artistic integrity, and the future of acting.

As AI continues to revolutionize the entertainment sector, Brody's Oscar victory has become a reference point for debates on the ethics of AI use in filmmaking. Some believe that AI-augmented performances devalue the art of human actors, while others view it as a source of creative augmentation. This controversy provokes questions of broader interest about the application of AI in filmmaking and the necessity of ethical oversight of its use.

The AI Role in The Brutalist

In The Brutalist, Brody acts as Hungarian-Jewish architect László Tóth. Even with intense training from a dialect coach, maintaining a credible Hungarian accent was a struggle. To solve this, the producers used Respeecher, an AI voice-cloning software, to edit the Hungarian-language dialogues of Brody and co-actor Felicity Jones.

As per film editor Dávid Jancsó, AI was applied to fix some vowel pronunciation and emphasis details and not to alter the actors' original performances. The disclosure that AI contributed to Brody's on-screen character has invited controversy regarding whether such technological support taints artistic value.

Ethical Issues and Industry Criticism

The application of AI in The Brutalist has resulted in mixed reactions within the industry. Critics argue that it is not right to let AI change performances since it would cloud the difference between an actor's natural ability and technical skill.

Others fear that AI performances would become a standard where technology overcomes human ability and devalues classical acting skills. This has been echoed with industry-wide concern regarding AI, which was at the center of the controversy surrounding the 2023 writers' and actors' strikes.

The Case For AI in Cinema

Instead, some of the other advocates of AI use in cinema take the argument that an AI like Respeecher can ethically enhance human performance instead of replacing it. Director Brady Corbet highlighted that Brutalist AI intrusions only straightened out language and did not change Brody's dialogue during English-language moments in the movie.

AI supporters view AI as a tool through which directors can allow actors to offer more realistic performances without literally changing their artistic content. An ethical AI application is purported to enhance creativity rather than substitute it.

The Wider Implications for Hollywood

Brody's Oscar places ethics in filmmaking with AI into a clearer perspective. As AI increasingly becomes part of Hollywood films, transparency, control, and aesthetic integrity are hotly debated.

This controversy points to the need for industry-wide standards for filmmaking with AI. Without codes of ethics, concerns that AI will displace human artists and monkey around with performances against their will will become increasingly stronger.

Adrien Brody's Oscar win has sparked a contentious debate regarding Hollywood's role in AI. Technology is changing each day, so it would be a Herculean task to balance innovation with artistic integrity by actors, directors, and the audience alike.
