The Who has reportedly split from drummer Zak Starkey after 29 years, following a disagreement about his performance at their Royal Albert Hall show last month.

The band's spokesperson told The Guardian,

"The band made a collective decision to part ways with Zak after this round of shows at the Royal Albert Hall. They have nothing but admiration for him and wish him the very best for his future."

Zak Starkey, son of Ringo Starr (The Beatles drummer) and Maureen Starkey, joined The Who in 1996 at the age of thirty. Two years before officially joining The Who, Starkey also toured with Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle for the Daltrey Sings Townshend shows, originally planned as a birthday tribute for Daltrey.

The sudden news of his removal from the band has come as a shock to The Who and Zak Starkey's fans.

The incident goes back to March 30, when The Who performed at the Royal Albert Hall for the Roger Daltrey Teenage Cancer Trust charity. While playing the song, The Song Is Over, Daltrey suddenly stopped the song and said,

"To sing that song I do need to hear the key, and I can’t. All I’ve got is drums going boom, boom, boom. I can’t sing to that. I’m sorry guys."

According to The Mirror, a close source added to the depth of the situation by adding,

"It was the final straw for the band and they knew they had to pull the plug. It's a shame but it is what it is."

After the news, Zak Starkey also added a post on Instagram with the caption,

"HEARD TODAY FROM INSIDE SOURCE WITHIN WHOSE HORSES NOSE THAT TOGER DAKTREY LEAD SINGER AND PRINCIPAL SONGWRITER OF THE GROUP UNHAPPY WITH ZAK THE DRUMMER’S PERFORMANCE AT THE ALBERT HALL A FEW WEEKS AGO IS BRINGING FORMAL CHARGES OF OVERPLAYING AND IS LITERALLY GOING TO ZAK THE DRUMMER AND BRING ON A RESERVE FROM ‘THE BURWASH CARWASH SKIFFLE ‘N’ TICKLE GLEE CLUB HARMONY WITHOUT EMPATHY ALLSTARS’ THIS HAS BEEN CONFIRMED BY WHOSE LONG TIME MANAGER WILLYA YOUWONTYOUKNOW"

While many fans are upset by the decision, saying Starkey’s strong drumming was a big part of The Who’s rock sound, others are agreeing, feeling his playing didn’t sound right during the show.

The Who is starting its UK tour on April 20. As of now, the band hasn't announced the name of the new drummer yet.
