Folk singer and songwriter Michael Hurley passed away in Astoria, Oregon, on April 3, 2025. Dubbed as the 'Godfather of freak folk', Hurley had an unconventional music career. With over 30 albums, the singer had said in an interview with the Guardian in 2021 that he didn't necessarily have the same standards as other musicians in the industry and had been called the "outsider artist". He noted,

“I preferred playing parties. Little gatherings. Drinking with friends, hopping across the river.”

Michael Hurley took the road less travelled and entered the music scene with the Greenwich Village folk scene in the 1960s. He is often linked with the resurgence of freak folk, which blends acoustic instrumentation and uncommon themes. The official statement was shared with his record label, No Quarter, and shared by his family reads,

“It is with a resounding sadness that the Hurley family announces the recent sudden passing of the inimitable Michael Hurley."

They called him the "Godfather of freak folk" and added that he,

"Was for a prolific half-century the purveyor of an eccentric genius and compassionate wit. He alone was Snock. There is no other. Friends, family, and the music community deeply mourn his loss.”

The note shared his "liner notes" from the First Songs, which are reminiscent of his deep commitment to music. Folways remember Hurley for,

"His wit and wild imagination, steadfast through the decades, are a beacon for singers and songwriters seeking to express the joys and fantastical idiosyncrasies of the world."

According to Mike Quinn, founder of No Quarter Records, he had reportedly finished working on a "new album" before he passed. He added,

"It was mastered the week before he died, and he was very proud of it (as he should be… it’s outstanding). Hopeful it will see the light of day soon.”
