The Sunday lineup of the AXE Ceremonia music festival in Mexico City was canceled following a tragic crane collapse on April 5, 2025.

According to a report in Rolling Stone, the incident occurred during the festival's first day at Bicentennial Park when a crane supporting a decorative metal structure fell due to a gust of wind. It resulted in the death of two photographers—Miguel Angel Rojas, 26, and Berenice Giles, 28, according to Mexican newspaper El Universal.

The festival confirmed the news in a statement shared on social media on April 6, 2025, which read:

“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the deaths of the two people injured during today’s incident. This loss deeply saddens us. We are contacting their families to be with them during this difficult time and offer our full support and solidarity. The safety of our community has always been our priority, and we have maintained, as we have from the very beginning, close collaboration and complete openness with the authorities.”

The two-day festival was supposed to last from April 5, 2025, till April 6, 2025. What else do we know about the incident?

Exploring more details about the tragic incident at AXE Ceremonia music festival

The AXE Ceremonia music festival’s Saturday (April 5, 2025) launch featured performances from a star-studded lineup that included British pop star Charli XCX, K-pop boy band Tomorrow X Together, regional Mexican singer Natanael Cano, and former "Elite" star Arón Piper, according to USA Today.

The Sunday (April 6, 2025) lineup included appearances from notable artists such as Tyler, the Creator, Lil Yachty, The Marías, and Nathy Peluso, among others.

Following the tragic news, Charlie XCX took to her Instagram to pay tribute through a story. She wrote:

"My heart is with the families and friends of Miguel and Berenice."

Aron Piper also shared on his account in Spanish,

“All of our love and support to the families of Berenice and Miguel.”

In another post on Instagram, the festival shared,

“The activities scheduled for today have been suspended, following the guidelines of the relevant authorities. Our sympathy and support go out to their families and loved ones during this difficult time.”

It further added that refunds would be automatically issued through Ticketmaster, as reported by the Independent.

Mauricio Tabe, the mayor of Miguel Hidalgo in Mexico, took to X to offer his condolences. He wrote:

“I deeply regret what happened today during a private event at Bicentennial Park. My deepest sympathy goes out to the families of the victims.”

According to a statement issued by the mayor’s office, the incident may have been caused by the installation of additional cranes, which was earlier not included in the program submitted to authorities for the pre-festival inspection, Billboard reported.

The report further stated that since it was a private event, the project director and the official in charge of Civil Protection, hired by the festival organizers, will face investigation by the Mexico City Prosecutor’s Office.
