Samara Cyn, who is an upcoming rapper from Murfreesboro, Tennessee and heavily influenced by Lauryn Hill, recently appeared alongside Hill at the Jazz in the Gardens music festival at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida on March 9, 2025. Samara Cyn was one of the artists brought out by Lauryn Hill, with the other artist being Doechii.
Samara Cyn keeps the details of her parents and relationships as well as early life mostly private. However, it is known that she listened to a lot of different music during her upbringing, with standouts including hip-hop, jazz and alternative rock.
She started her music life while attending Arizona State University, rapping her poems, before being featured in collaborative projects such as Crookland, Last Night, and Dropout Cypher Vol.2.
Samara Cyn has so far released several singles as well as her debut album, The Drive Home. The singer talked about her music in an exclusive interview on NME's C24 artists issue:
"As I evolved as an artist, I stopped wanting to be just a ‘great rapper. I wanted to make really good music. Writing, for me, has been a constant thing. It’s my spark for my music. It’s these kids that looked like me, and were young and they were doing poetry in a different type of way than Edgar Allan Poe."
The singer continued:
"After that, it opened my mind up to more slam poetry cadences, talking about societal issues and the things that I was going through and how to express myself. It’s like a puzzle. I’m trying to figure out how I can say what I’m trying to say, in the cleverest way possible, in a rhyme scheme and a cadence."
The singer continued:
"I think the most beautiful things are very simple, consolidated and precise. I’ve definitely tried to refine and figure out how to say what I want to say in fewer words. We were just talking about being stuck in that same relationship and not being able to get out of it and I feel like I was definitely pulling from situations that I was just coming out of."
The singer also talked about her writing and recording process:
"I really love cook-up sessions, which is basically where everybody makes everything from scratch. I like hearing the beat build. Normally, I’m writing as the beat is being created. When the beat is done, I try to be done with my lyrics."
