Brand New's vocalist Jesse Lacey was accused of se**al misconduct with a minor back in 2017, before the band went on hiatus until late 2024. Nicole Elizabeth Garey, the survivor, took to a Facebook thread to detail how Jesse Lacey had solicitated nudes from her while she was 15 and he was 24, as well other acts of se**al misconduct.
Part of her statement is here quoted from the Uproxx article on the matter on November 10, 2017:
“YES. He solicited n*des from me starting when I was 15 and he was 24. Manipulated the hell out of me, demanded specific poses/settings/clothing, demeaned me, and made it clear that my se***lity was the only thing I had to offer. It f**d me up to the point that I STILL have nightmares and wakeup in a sweat...."
This was soon followed by similar allegations from another woman, Emily Driskill, who spoke to Pitchfork magazine on November 13, 2017, talking about the history of her abuse by Lacey, particularly the years following them:
"When you’re groomed like that, you don’t know how to have a peaceful, loving, fulfilling relationship with anybody. Instead you think, ‘Oh, I have to get naked, I have to say dirty sh*t, I have to be at this person’s beck and call."
Jesse Lacey went on to acknowledge and admit to the allegations, stating in an apology posted on the band's official socials:
“The actions of my past have caused pain and harm to a number of people, and I want to say that I am absolutely sorry. I do not stand in defense of myself nor do I forgive myself. I was selfish, narcissistic, and insensitive in my past, and there are a number of people who have had to shoulder the burden of my failures. I apologize for the hurt I have caused, and hope to be able to take the correct actions to earn forgiveness and trust."
Subsequent to these allegations, Brand New went on hiatus. Now, however, they have announced a new tour, reigniting the controversy surrounding their vocalist. This has led to venue socials disabling comments on the posts announcing the shows.
No venue has come forward to address the history of Jesse Lacey and their choice of hosting Brand New, a band associated with him as of the writing of this article.
