Mariah Carey wins lawsuit against Andy Stone of Vince Vance

This comes weeks after Carey's copyright lawsuit win against Andy Stone, the lead vocalist of Vince Vance and the Valiants.

He wrote his song, which is also named "All I Want for Christmas Is You," in 1989. In the lawsuit, Stone accused Carey and her crew of stealing the "compositional structure" of his song.

According to the court docs, Carey "directly" lifted lyrics from Stone's 1989 hit, and "approximately 50%" of the song violates copyright.

Stone's rendition of "All I Want for Christmas is You" had "undoubtedly" been available to Carey and her team because of its "wide commercial and cultural success." In the spring of 1994, the same year Carey's song was published, Stone's band played the song during a visit to the White House.

Stone's tune remained on the Billboard list for years. According to the court documents, Vince Vance and the Valiants' song returned to the Billboard Hot Country Chart in 1994 as a result of the White House performance.

Judge Mónica Ramírez Almadani heard arguments from two experts on each side. The defense suggested that the writers used popular Christmas clichés that existed before both songs, but Carey's song used them in a distinctive way. According to her, the plaintiffs had failed to demonstrate that the songs were significantly similar.

In addition, the judge imposed penalties on Stone and Powers, stating that the plaintiffs had brought a baseless complaint and "made no reasonable effort to ensure that the factual contentions asserted have evidentiary support." Additionally, they will be responsible for a portion of Carey's legal bills.
