The Mars Volta released their new album, Lucro Sucio; Los Ojos del Vacío, on April 11, 2025. The album is their first new album since 2023's Que Dios Te Maldiga Mi Corazón, as well as being their third studio album since their reunion.
The Mars Volta talked about their new music after the release of their 2022 seventh studio album, their first album after reunion, in an exclusive interview with The Line of Best Fit on September 26, 2022, with band member Cedric Bixler-Zavala stating:
"For me it was what is now 'Vigil', I used to call it something else. It was right at the tail-end of At the Drive-In, we were going to try to make a little bit more music, but it wasn't that it wasn't clicking, it was just time to put it to rest and work on this now."
The singer continued:
"Some of the music and ideas that were kicking around just didn't really stick. Then once I started getting bigger playlists from him, that song just took me out and gave me that feeling. I think that was 2018 maybe, and I think the seeds of what it was dictated what the vocals and the words were gonna be like."
The singer continued:
"A lot happened like that. I was living in this place at the time and there was this gigantic redwood tree in the front yard, at night I would go out there and listen to it and was always moved to tears, so I knew that that was the direction, to be vulnerable and direct. Even in 2018 I don't think I was there yet."
He later added:
"I don't think we had achieved a Sunday morning record, or a direction like that, so it was kinda cool to see it sprouting in 2018 into that, and everything that's been happening in our lives dictated that it should be going in this direction. But like I said, Omar had the first idea of it moving this way and I had been resistant to it."
The Mars Volta is best known for their records such as The Bedlam in Goliath (released in 2008) and Octahedron, which was released in 2009. The band released its first album in 2003.
