Mick Fleetwood and Lindsey Buckingham reunited in the recording studio in what was a special event for Fleetwood Mac fans. They have not been together since Lindsey Buckingham exited the band in 2018. They have collaborated as part of Fleetwood's solo work on his new album, with producer Carl Falk.
Falk wrote in his post on threads that it was a "slightly unreal moment" and also spoke about Buckingham being thrilled to be on board.
While this reunion is not technically an indication of the reformation of Fleetwood Mac, it does reflect a fresh working relationship between two central members of the band's heritage.
Mick Fleetwood and Lindsey Buckingham making new music
Producer Carl Falk uploaded photos of Buckingham and Fleetwood in the studio, verifying their collaboration. With a picture of Buckingham, he wrote:
"Mick and Lindsey together again, what a flawless guitar player."
Lindsey Buckingham is adding guitar and vocals to Fleetwood's solo album. Although details about the record are scarce, this session has created buzz with long-time fans.
Buckingham's exit from Fleetwood Mac in 2018 was a big shift for the band, so his involvement in Fleetwood's project is a significant move. Falk's words indicate that the two artists have been able to come together on this creative project. Whether this is the start of more collaborative efforts or a one-off effort remains to be determined.
The reunion doesn't seem to imply that Fleetwood Mac will reunite
Even though Fleetwood and Lindsey Buckingham are collaborating, no indication is given that Fleetwood Mac will reunite. Since the death of Christine McVie in 2022; Fleetwood and Stevie Nicks have also questioned the band's continuation.
Nicks has said that Fleetwood Mac, as she knew it, cannot exist without McVie. Although various members have made solo efforts and side projects, a complete reunion does not seem like an immediate possibility. This recording session is more of a personal project by Fleetwood than a reconstituting of the band.
There remains tension between former band members
Fleetwood has said that he would like to see Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham reconcile, recognizing the long-standing intricacies in their relationship. He told Rolling Stones:
"I can't comment on the dynamic with Stevie and Buckingham. I don't even need to defend it. It's so well-known that they are chalk and cheese in so many ways, and yet not."
Their personal and professional history has been complicated for decades.
Lindsey Buckingham and Nicks have had a particularly tumultuous relationship, and though the two have shared public interactions on occasion, there has been no indication that the issues have been resolved. Fleetwood's reunion with Buckingham might help to improve things, but it does not necessarily indicate that all old issues have been dropped.
For the time being, it is a milestone in their careers, showing both their collective musical history and what they are working on currently.
