Slayer released their latest studio album, Repentless, back in 2015. The album came after the death of longtime band member Jeff Hanneman in 2013. The album was supposed to be followed by another album, but that was canceled and the band disbanded for a time after that.
Reign in Blood remains Slayer's most popular record to date, alongside South of Heaven. Band member, Tom Araya, spoke about Reign in Blood in an exclusive interview with The Quietus on February 16, 2012, just about a year before Jeff Hanneman's death and during Hanneman's health crisis:
"A lot of bands were doing long and epic songs, so we purposely wrote fast songs and wrote a fast album. We didn’t realise it would be as fast as it was. We got into the studio, and when we were working on the songs, Rubin was like, "Alright that’s great," then he’d look and Dave and say, "Come on now, speed it up a little bit… Tighten it up just a notch…""
The singer continued:
"And that’s how the record came out sounding as it did. I know that Jeff and Kerry purposely wrote fast songs. It was a very punk-rooted type of album, because, even though we did Hell Awaits, Jeff was a fan of punk music, and that was something that he introduced to us as a band, and Dave was a big fan also."
The singer added:
"He kind of jumped on board. I wasn’t a fan, but I enjoyed the music, there was some really good stuff. Great music, great lyrics… And he was able to apply it to the album and to the music we were creating."
Slayer started out all the way back in 1981 with Kerry King, Tom Araya, Dave Lombardo, and Jeff Hanneman. The current lineup of the band is Tom Araya, Kerry King, Gary Holt, and Paul Bostaph.
