Imagine Dragons went down in history when their tune "Children of the Sky" was sent to the Moon first as music. The track formed part of Lonestar Data Holdings' mission to build a data center on the Moon. The band envisioned that their track would educate and inspire future generations regarding space technology and exploration.

The mission was launched on February 26, 2025, aboard the Athena spacecraft with the data payload. The intention was to land on the Moon and then transmit the song back to Earth. This would have been a new milestone in the relationship between music and space technology.

Complications intervened, though, when the spacecraft made a side landing on March 6, missing its target. Due to this, the broadcast did not occur as planned. In spite of this mishap, the song still lingers on the Moon as a human achievement and symbol of creativity.

Why was Children of the Sky by Imagine Dragons chosen?

Imagine Dragons composed Children of the Sky for Bethesda's video game Starfield. The theme of the song aligns with concepts of space exploration, discovery, and the future. Its lyrics are about exploration and searching beyond Earth for solutions.

Imagine Dragons' intention was to utilize music as a means of motivating youth. By launching the song into space, they wished to demonstrate how art and science can coexist. They wanted children to realize that anything is possible with creativity and innovation.

The choice to select this song was also informed by its inspirational message. Its lyrics are concerned with curiosity and exploration. Its message was the kind that was thought to reflect well on space exploration and technology.

What was the mission's goal?

Lonestar Data Holdings spearheaded the endeavor with a mission of establishing a data center on the Moon. The center was meant to house digital files securely in a low-risk situation. The endeavor sought to explore how well data could be accessed and stored from the lunar surface.

“Our goal is to inspire the next generation of kids to be excited about the future of space and technology, which is why we chose ‘Children of the Sky’ as the first song in history to be broadcast from the Moon,” Lonestar investor Ryan Micheletti said in a statement at the time.

One of the milestones to be implemented was to play Children of the Sky by Imagine Dragons back to Earth. It would have been the first time that a song had been heard on the Moon and sent out to people on Earth. It was supposed to be a time when technology, music, and space history combined.

The mission also investigated the ways in which future lunar data centers might be utilized. These centers might hold valuable records, messages, and research, if they are successful, in a location safe from natural disasters and cyberattacks.

What went wrong with the landing?

The Athena spacecraft went to the Moon but never landed where it was intended to. It remained on its side, not upright. This influenced its operational state and that of its equipment, including data returns to Earth.

Due to this issue, the scheduled broadcast of the song was aborted. The mission team was unable to correct the problem remotely. The data payload, including the song, is still on the Moon, but it will not be sent.

Although the mission was not a total success, the fact that music by Imagine Dragons has been sent to the Moon is still noteworthy. It is a stepping stone for more ventures that incorporate space technology, art, and culture in the future.

Imagine Dragons and Lonestar Data Holdings set out to create history with a unique project. Their goal was to use music to inspire young people about space exploration and technology. While the planned broadcast failed, the mission still marks an important moment in the relationship between music and space.

The song "Children of the Sky" now sits on the Moon as a symbol of human ambition. Future missions may build on this idea and find ways to complete similar projects successfully. For now, Imagine Dragons’ music has reached beyond Earth, showing how creativity can push boundaries in unexpected ways.
