Despite the vision impairment that Elton John is going through, he and American singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile have worked together on a new collaborative studio album that was released a few days ago. The new album titled, Who Believes in Angels?, was released on April 4, 2025.

John has always been transparent with his fans, and last year, he shared that because of a severe eye infection, he now has "limited vision in one eye". During a recent interview with The Times, Elton John got candid and shared about his current situation. He says he has not watched television or seen anything since July last year. He added,

"I can’t read. I can’t see my boys playing rugby and soccer, and it has been a very stressful time because I’m used to soaking it all up. It’s distressing... You get emotional, but you have to get used to it because I’m lucky to have the life I have. I still have my wonderful family, and I can still see something out of here" - John shared.

He also explained how the issue with his vision has impacted his creativity when it comes to making music. Elton John gets out of this slump by telling himself,

"you say to yourself, just get on with it" - Elton John said.

Elton John also shared a few hurdles he experienced while working on his most recent collaborative studio album with Brandi Carlile, producer Andrew Watt, and his long-time songwriter buddy, Bernie Taupin.

One of the feelings John experienced was "frustration" when the people he was working with stood up to him. He also shared how he was on the verge of giving up, but changed his mind because he knew he would regret it. In his words,

"If I want to make a great album aged 76 or 77 I’ve got to be told and they put up with my little foibles, which were really about anxiety, self-doubt and not feeling very well at the time. I was tired so I thought, I’m going to abandon this... The problem was three other people were involved and I knew that if I walked away from it I would hate myself for the rest of my life."

The collaborative studio album, Who Believes in Angels? has 10 tracks. All the songs were written by the four people who worked on them, which include Elton, Brandi, Andrew Watt, and Bernie Taupin. The only exclusion is The Rose of Laura Nyro, which was written by the eponymous American singer and songwriter.
