Will Smith is set to make a return to the music industry with his new album, Based on a True Story, scheduled for release on March 28. He is releasing this album two decades after releasing the famous Lost and Found in 2005. The actor announced it on Instagram, expressing his excitement about finally sharing the project with fans.
Based on a True Story consists of 14 tracks and features collaborations with artists, including DJ Jazzy Jeff, Teyana Taylor, and Jac Ross. Will Smith revealed the release date on Instagram:

The album also includes previously released singles such as Beautiful Scars, Work of Art, Tantrum, and You Can Make It. Absolutely, each track embodies Smith's distinctive style of weaving stories with introspection and strong uplifting themes.
In a May 2024 interview with Extra, Will Smith discussed the album, saying,
"You know, I've been, this last year and a half, I've been in the lab. I have a project that is, you know, without question, the most personal and powerful music that I've ever made."
In an interview with Billboard in January, Smith opened up about returning to music after a long gap. He revealed that Based on a True Story is part of a larger creative vision, hinting at plans for three interconnected albums.
Will Smith said,
“A well opened up inside of me, a well of understanding of art and pain … all kinds of things that I didn’t even know were in there."
He added,
"Then after the Oscars, that spiritual investigation continued and a whole world woke up inside that I didn’t even know was there. Dreams, visions; parts of my inner landscape that I had no awareness of before three years ago. And that opened up this bubbling to share what I’m seeing and experiencing, to explore.”
His latest single, Beautiful Scars, teased the album and brought in some groovy beats and vocals from Big Sean together with Obanga.
The music video for the song gained significant attention online due to Smith’s portrayal of Neo, a character from The Matrix, a role he famously declined in favor of Wild Wild West. Big Sean stepped right up to play Morpheus's role alongside him.
