California-based surf company Lost International LLC has filed a $100 million lawsuit against pop icon Lady Gaga. The company claims that she infringed on their trademarked 'Mayhem' logo.
The lawsuit reportedly alleges that Lady Gaga's branding for her new album, Mayhem, and its related merchandise closely resembles Lost International's trademarked design. The company has reportedly been using the design since 2015, according to People.
The singer's legal team says in a statement:
“This is nothing more than an opportunistic and meritless abuse of the legal system.”
However, the surf company argues that the similarities in design could mislead consumers and damage the brand's reputation.
Los Angeles Times reports that Lost International LLC's lawsuit against Lady Gaga mentions:
"Lost began using the [logo] in 1986, and in January 1992 in interstate commerce. Since then, Lost has used the [logo] in connection with surfboards, surf equipment, clothing, accessories, and surf videos, in over 30 countries worldwide."
It adds:
"Lady Gaga's actions are likely to mislead the public into concluding that her goods originate with or are authorised by Lost, which will damage both Lost and the public. Lost has no control over the quality of goods sold by Lady Gaga and because of the source of confusion caused by Lady Gaga, Lost has lost control over its valuable goodwill."
On the other hand, the singer's lawyer, Orin Snyder, has responded to Rolling Stone about the allegations, stating:
"Lady Gaga's Mayhem soared to No. 1 and shattered records, a testament to her unmatched talent and global impact. It’s disappointing —but hardly surprising — that someone is now attempting to capitalize on her success with a baseless lawsuit over the name Mayhem. This is nothing more than an opportunistic and meritless abuse of the legal system."
What are the allegations against Lady Gaga?
Surf and lifestyle brand Lost International has a Mayhem line of surfboards and apparel. The company filed the lawsuit in a California district court on March 25, 2025, claiming Lady Gaga's use of the word 'Mayhem' in her album branding, tour promotions, and merchandise is nearly identical to their logo, which the brand has allegedly used for a long time.
According to the complaint, Lost International LLC has been using the Mayhem branding since 1986. The trademark was officially registered in 2015. The company claims that Lady Gaga's merchandise, T-shirts, hoodies, and other accessories, feature a logo that is “substantially similar” to their own.
Additionally, TMZ reports that Lost claims they attempted to resolve the issue privately by sending a cease-and-desist letter to Lady Gaga's team. However, the company alleges that it was ignored. Now, the brand is seeking damages and legal intervention to stop the singer from using the design.
The lawsuit demands $100 million in damages, as the surf company reportedly argued that the pop icon's merchandise sales and reach have caused harm to Lost's business.
