Vocal coach Eric Vetro is reportedly a well-known teacher in Hollywood who has worked with various celebrities. Vetro coached Ariana Grande in Wicked and Timothee Chalamet in A Complete Unknown. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter on February 28, 2025, he said the two artists had something special in them.
According to BBC Maestro, Eric Vetro has a background in classical training, and he emphasizes practical techniques to improve vocal performance. He believes that even small adjustments can make a big difference in helping anyone become a better singer. His expertise has contributed to over 30 platinum records and numerous musical films.
Vetro has been working with Ariana Grande since she was 13 and previously coached Timothee Chalamet for his role in Wonka. His approach focuses on strengthening an actor’s natural voice for weeks before they begin shaping it to fit their character. Speaking about Ariana Grande, he said:
“Anybody who knows her knows she is that funny all the time. But I think part of what made it work so well in the movie is she didn’t have to think about the music or her voice. She worked so diligently for those months leading up to filming and she was so confident.”
In the interview piece, Eric Vetro mentioned that he was meticulous about vocal care, often making requests like keeping dressing rooms free of scented flowers and candles while ensuring proper air humidity. He also advises his students to be mindful of their voice in daily activities, avoiding loud cheering at sports events or singing along at concerts to prevent strain.
More about Eric Vetro’s work with Timothee Chalamet
The Hollywood Reporter noted that Chalamet had already immersed himself in the role before working with Eric Vetro. The vocal coach was impressed by how he captured Bob Dylan’s essence without just mimicking him, but bringing the character to life authentically.
Vetro noted that Chalamet had a strong grasp of vocal nuances. He knew when to emphasize or soften consonants and adjust his cadence to match Dylan’s speech patterns.
Even with lines he hadn’t heard Dylan say before, he instinctively knew where to place emphasis, showcasing artistic talent. However, concerning his profession, Eric Vetro said:
“I can’t get to work with everybody who wants to work with me. Or some people are really shy about singing, and they don’t want anyone to hear them. Now they can do it and no one’s going to hear it. I just thought, this is really great. This is a great way to help all of those people. I feel like the luckiest person on the planet.”
Eric Vetro attended NYU and briefly explored performing after graduation. However, a mild case of stage fright led him to realize he was more comfortable working behind the scenes as a vocal coach, a path he has stuck with ever since, doing what he loved from a young age.
In a Vanity Fair interview from 2024, it was mentioned that when Angelina Jolie approached him for vocal training, she was starting from scratch. Unlike many of his students, she had never sung before. Preparing to portray opera legend Maria Callas, she had to overcome a deep-seated reluctance toward singing.
