Aurelio Martinez Suazo is commonly referred to using just his first name, Aurelio. He was a Honduran musician and later turned politician. Aurelio was well-known in the music scene, especially for his Garifuna music. He was also considered to be the cultural ambassador of the Garifuna people. Suazo took the front stage as a Garifuna musician after the previous leader of the Garifuna people, Andy Palacio, passed away.
Aurelio was not only the face of Garifuna music and the Garifuna people, but he was also a part of the National Congress of Honduras for four years (2006 to 2010). He made history by becoming the first Black member of the National Congress of Honduras.
In a sad turn of events, Aurelio and a few other passengers passed away in a plane crash just minutes after taking off. They boarded the Jetstream aircraft, which was operated by Lanhsa, a Honduran airline.

On March 18, 2025, Aurelio Martinez Suazo and 14 other passengers, including three crew members, boarded a Jetstream aircraft by Lanhsa. The plane was headed to La Ceiba airport, which was located on the mainland of Honduras. However, a few minutes after takeoff, the plane crashed into the sea.
According to reports, only 10 passengers survived the crash, and 7 people were ki**ed including Honduran singer and politician Aurelio Martinez Suazo. According to a statement by the Honduran transport minister, the crash site was located around 0.6 miles or 1 km away from the Roatan coast.
The exact cause of the crash is still under investigation, and no statement has been received from the airline as of now. The surviving passengers were taken to the nearest hospital on the island for treatment.
In an interview with Reuters, Franklin Borjas, who is the Roatan fire captain, explained how difficult the search and rescue mission was. He said,
"It's been difficult to access the accident (site) because there are 30 meters (98 ft) of rocks and you can't get there while walking or swimming... The divers helping with the rescue have zero visibility." - Borjas stated.
Aurelio Martinez Suazo was only 55 years old when he passed. One of his peak moments as a musician was when his songs were used in the German Archaeological Institute documentary about an excavation along the Honduran coast.
