In an emotional and implausible story, Liv and Mia Tyler recently thought back on the moment they first met as strangers without knowing they were sisters. The two children of Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler talked about how they met at a performance that permanently altered their lives when they appeared on the Sibling Revelry podcast with Kate and Oliver Hudson on April 13.

When Liv, 47, and Mia, 46, met at an Aerosmith show in the 1980s, they were just nine and eight years old. Liv and her mother, Bebe Buell, had grown up in Maine, whereas Mia and her mother, Cyrinda Foxe, had grown up in New Hampshire. When both of their moms took them to the same concert, which was hosted at a place named Great Woods, their lives unintentionally came together.

“I grew up in New Hampshire and she grew up in Maine. The same year we both were moved to New York City by our moms.”

Mia recalled,

"I remember there were no kids backstage. So we played hard that night. And we were at this VIP area, outside of the green rooms, and we were just like, you know, doing our eight and nine-year-old thing, and this fan lady came up and she was like 'oh my god, you girls are so cute. Are you guys sisters?'"

She replied,

"Yeah.’ We pretended we were sisters.”

At this point, Liv already knew that they were sisters while Mia was acting.

Liv continued,

"That particular night that she's [Mia] talking about, Guns n'Roses were opening for Aerosmith. It was the beginning of their song 'Welcome to the Jungle.' We had driven to the gig at a place called Great Woods."

She added,

"We got tickets and we went to the audience and we were standing, and Guns n' Roses was playing and I was so excited because I just like loved Guns n' Roses. And on the side of the stage was this one girl standing there."

And then Mia recalled,

"Axl [Rose] used to dedicate 'Sweet Child o Mine' to me like every tour, and he'd like bring me out on stage and be like 'this is again to you.'"

Liv then added,

"I just remember standing there watching them play, looking and seeing this girl who looked exactly like me. Like we literally had the same outfit on. We had both had perms, like spiral perms, pink frosty lipstick. We were both wearing a Aerosmith concert t-shirt with black leggings and Reebok high top sneakers. I looked and I was like, wait, that's me. It was really weird. I was literally like looking in the mirror seeing double."

Liv recalled her mother describing their special family dynamic following the song dedication.

"I looked at my mom, and she just started crying. My mom was bawling, and I was like, 'is Steven my dad?' and she just burst. She took me to a bench and we sat on at an outdoor amphitheater, and she told me the whole story in the most sincere, beautiful way."

Soon after they learned the truth, they started exchanging postcards and realized that they had "so much in common" and didn't have to pretend to be sisters anymore.

Steven Tyler had phoned Buell to "make amends" after entering rehab in 1986, and they met up at Rundgren's Boston gig.

"That night, I met Steven,"

Liv Tyler added.

"There was an increase in his presence throughout that year. Other than thinking he was amazing, I didn't know who he was."

It was only during the concert that she found out that Steven was her biological father.

Todd Rundgren's role in Liv Tyler's life

For the first ten years of her life, Liv Tyler had grown up believing that Todd Rundgren was her father. Around the time Liv was born, in 1977, her mother was concerned about Steven Tyler's drug abuse and informed Todd Rundgren, who she was dating back then, about her pregnancy. Bebe spoke to him, and Rundgren agreed to raise the baby and also have his name on the birth certificate as her father.

Liv said,

“I think she got a little bit scared when she realized how much drugs my dad was doing. I think as the story goes: she called Todd and said she was pregnant… and basically, he very courageously and lovingly said, ‘This child needs a father, and I will be the father,’”

Liv Tyler went on to talk about the distance that was created when she started to create a bond with her father and her half sister.

"I think it's probably still very hard and painful and I don't speak to him enough. I love him. I have brothers from him and I had a whole family with them."

Steven Tyler has 4 children with 3 different women. Liv with Bebe Buell, Mia with his first ex-wife, Cyrinda Foxe, and Chelsea and Taj with his second ex-wife, Teresa Barrick.
