On Saturday, April 19, 2025, the heavy metal band Metallica opened their tour for this year with a concert at the JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse, New York. The show reportedly packed over 47,500 fans into the venue, breaking the long-standing record of 47,319 fans since 1982.
The concert was also Metallica's first visit to Syracuse in 30 years. They delivered a career-spanning set that featured old tracks, relatively new material, and more. The concert was part of the ongoing M72 World Tour, which began in 2023 as a global campaign supporting the band's latest album, 72 Seasons.
The tour is named after the album. It has seen the band play in stadiums and arenas worldwide with its "No Repeat Weekend" format, that is, two nights in each city with completely different setlists. However, Syracuse got a single-night show with select tracks from both sets.
One of the significant features of the M72 tour is its in-the-round stage design. Rather than a traditional setup, the band performs on a circular platform with the crowd surrounding them from all sides.
In Syracuse, the band reportedly brought their full production. According to reports, there were 79 trucks' worth of gear, which helped the JMA Wireless Dome turn into a heavy metal arena. This was nearly four times the number of trucks used for Bruce Springsteen’s performance at the same venue a year earlier.
Complete setlist for Metallica's 2025 M72 tour's opening night
Metallica played a 16-song set that was pulled from nine of their ten studio albums in Syracuse. The band only skipped 2003's St. Anger and the Lou Reed collaboration Lulu. They opened with two tracks from Ride the Lightning, which were Creeping Death and For Whom the Bell Tolls.
The show balanced deep cuts and fan favorites. Tracks like Hit the Lights, Seek & Destroy, and One were performed. From the Black Album, Nothing Else Matters, Sad but True, and the show-closing Enter Sandman made the crowd sing along.
Newer tracks like Lux Æterna and Screaming Suicide from 72 Seasons were also performed
As reported by Consequence, Metallica's setlist for Syracuse was as follows:

After the show, Metallica took to their official X (formerly Twitter) handle to pen a note for the attendees. The post read:
"Thank you, Syracuse!!! We had an amazing time kicking off this year’s #M72 Tour at JMA Wireless Dome, where you set a new all-time attendance record with over 47,500 of you welcoming us for our first show!"
With 47,500 attendees, Metallica broke the previous attendance record held by The Who since 1982.
