Luis Conriquez's concert ends in chaos as the singer refuses to sing Narcocorridos during a concert on April 11 in Texcoco.
What was supposed to be a night of music and celebration turned into utter chaos when Mexican corrido singer Luis R. Conriquez refused to perform his signature narcocorridos during his performance at a concert at a palenque on April 11. The Palenque (a more intimate format at popular fairs) concert, which was being held in the municipality of Texcoco, ended prematurely with the audience booing him off the stage for not playing his famous corridos before all chaos ensued. The singer had been singing covers of other artists and some of his own songs when the crowd realised that the corridos were missing from his setlist. They started chanting "Corridos! Corridos!" which led to Luis Conriquez responding bluntly:
There are no corridos. What do we do? Should I just go home instead?
Most of his corridos have been criticized for allegedly glorifying drug trafficking. However, not playing them upset the attendees to the point that they started shouting, throwing punches, and causing property damage at the venue.
Luis Conriquez shares reasons before the concert
Prior to his April 11 concert, Luis Conriquez had post ed on an Instagram story that he would not be playing those songs anymore at the Texcoco Fair.
"We’re entering a new phase, without corridos and all that. It feels bad not being able to sing what people want to hear, but we’re joining the cause of zero corridos and moving forward."
In another story, he elaborated:
"There are many people who don’t understand. They think we’re the ones setting the rules, but the truth is there won’t be any corridos at events from now on, for any artist, my people. Cheer up. I love you all. The people who truly support us will continue doing so, even if we’re playing bachata"
Even though the Mexican singer explained the reasoning behind his actions in removing the narcocorridos from his setlist, the crowd expressed their discontent and started booing, throwing empty and drink-filled cups toward the stage. Seeing this, the singer rushed out of the venue, which led to more destruction as the booing escalated to throwing chairs.
Conriquez had tried to get his point across through the chanting as well, just before the barraging started. He stated:
This is the first time I’m doing a palenque show without corridos, so either we adapt and party or… I’m going home. Let’s get romantic instead… actually, I’m out
Ban on Narcocorridos
Luis Conriquez's decision not to perform "Narcocorridos" aligns with the wider government crackdown aiming at restricting music and emblems that promote violence at public fairs and events in any way. The Jalisco administration has submitted a bill to modify the rule against glorifying crime in public or private performances, while Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum announced the binational contest México Canta (Mexico Sings) this week. The initiative was started to encourage young artists to stop singing and creating music that doesn't glorify violence or drug usage.
