As she was honored as Artist of the Year at the BRIT Awards, Charli XCX pushed back on criticism over her choice of clothing.
On stage on March 1, Charli XCX revealed that the broadcasters criticized her for going braless, noting that they were “complaining about my nipples.” The Guess singer, clad in a sheer black Dilara Findikoglu dress that showed off her bare chest, said on ITV:
"I heard that ITV were complaining about my nipples. I feel like we’re in the era of free the nipple though, right?” She added, as the applause began, “They put the clap track on, cool. Thanks for being on my side.”

At the BRIT Awards, Charli XCX was honored with a staggering 5 awards, including Song of the Year, Dance Act, Album of the Year, and Artist of the Year. She was also awarded the Songwriter of the Year prize. During her speech for Artist of the Year, she said:
"I've always been an artist. It really takes a whole team — and they're all sat at that table. I just want to say thank you so much to the people who helped me make this record." She added, “I think I’m living proof that maybe it takes a long time, but you don’t need to compromise. You don’t need to compromise your vision. It’s kind of the long road, but if you do your own thing and you do it well, eventually, if you believe in yourself enough [and] if you make good enough music, people will resonate with you and be right there with you.”
Charli XCX also thanked all those who believed in her, including producers A.G. Cook and Finn Keane, as well as her fiancé and collaborator, George Daniel. She also teased fans about what to expect in her next album:
"I feel like it's so in my instinct to just not do the same thing twice," she said. "So I'll probably never make a record like this again. I'll probably reject it completely and do something completely different. I think that's the charm of being an artist. So thank you so much to the people who've been with me the whole way."
As she accepted the Album of the Year award, she reflected on how she used to think getting recognition had no meaning to her. She used to
"tell myself that things like this weren’t important, this kind of recognition and awards in general weren’t important," noting that it was "really easy for me to do because, until last year, I was literally never nominated for anything. Now, it’s cool to not be in that position.”
She also revealed that she has always
"felt like an outsider in the industry, but particularly in the British music industry, and it feels really nice to be recognized on this album when I actually haven’t really made any sacrifices."
The 360 singer claims to be -
"living proof that maybe it takes a long time, but you don’t need to compromise. You don’t need to compromise your vision."
At the time of writing, ITV has yet to respond to Charli XCX's statements on the matter.
