On April 9, 2025, rapper Fat Joe sat down with Today on the "3rd Hour" to discuss his latest album and weight-loss journey. In December 2024, Joe released his eleventh studio album, The World Changed On Me.
As the hosts welcomed him to the show, one of them pointed out that even though his name was Fat Joe, he was no longer fat, calling him Slim Joe. Joe joked about the comment, saying he was TV personality Al Roker's twin, adding:
“That's who I am And so it's not so Fat Joe. We trying to stay alive brother.”
The rapper revealed that he lost approximately 250 pounds over 10 years. When asked if this had been transformative for him, Fat Joe said it was rewarding health-wise, but he still felt like himself. Speaking to Us Weekly in October 2024, the rapper shared that eliminating carbs from his diet helped him lose weight.
He and his team avoided foods like bread, pasta, and rice because they believed this was a healthier way to eat. For example, during breakfast that morning, he had some toast but only ate a small piece and left the rest. In the past, he would have finished the whole thing, but now he tries to cut back on carbs and make better food choices.
Fat Joe's comeback to music and journey with his son's autism
One of the hosts pointed out that "The World Changed On Me" was his first solo album in 15 years and asked what inspired him to return to music. The rapper replied:
“You know, we don't stop painters from painting artists. We don't just, you know, I had a lot to say and I just felt like putting it out artistically through my music. It's a beautiful project, you know, I got legends like Babyface on there with me, Anitta, Khaled, my sister Remy. And so it just felt like saying something and that's the best way I know how that's the gift God gave me to really communicate with the people.”
When asked about working with his collaborators, Fat Joe shared that teaming up with Babyface was a special experience. He had admired Babyface for so long that he never imagined they would become friends.
Joe compared it to those surprising moments in the industry where someone finds themselves regularly having dinner with people they once only dreamed of meeting. He felt grateful that his career had allowed him to not only meet but also work alongside the artists he had looked up to long before becoming a professional.
One of the hosts noted that April is Autism Awareness Month and mentioned that Fat Joe had openly discussed his son Joey being on the spectrum. The rapper explained that although he didn't know much about autism initially, he and his family loved and supported his son deeply.
He described Joey as the heart of the family and always joyful. Joe pointed out that if it was tough for him, it would be even more difficult for others without the same resources. By openly expressing love and support for his son, he hoped it would encourage other families to feel confident that they were making the right choices.
