Sister-trio-led rock band HAIM released their new single Relationships on March 12, 2025. According to Pitchfork, the song, produced by Rostam Batmanglij and Danielle Haim, is the band’s first release since 2023. The band comprises sisters Este, Danielle, and Alana Haim.
The music video of the track is directed by Camille Summers-Valli, and features actor Drew Starkey. Sharing the news of the release on Instagram, the band wrote:
“This one took us 7 damn years to crack but we’re so stoked it’s finally here!! Relationships is out now. Single girl summer let’s f**king go.”
The band expressed their gratitude in the Instagram post, thanking Batmanglij for his dedication to bringing the song to life. They also acknowledged record producer Buddy Ross for helping complete the track.
They praised director Camille Summers-Valli for creating a stunning and passionate music video and gave a special shoutout to Drew Starkey, calling him the best.
After first teasing the song on TikTok, HAIM continued to share short clips featuring the sisters dancing and lip-syncing along. The band also dropped visual clues about the song’s theme, like photos of bracelets. A press release confirmed that Relationships is the first preview of an upcoming album. The last studio album, Women in Music Pt. III, came out in 2020.
In the music video, Danielle is joined by her sisters, Este and Alana, as they pack up and move out of a house following a breakup. Vulture reviewed the single noting that the song explores questions about relationships. Instead of dwelling on romantic regrets with a slow ballad or mid-tempo track, HAIM have taken an upbeat approach.
HAIM sisters talk about the inspiration behind the upcoming album
In an interview with I-D, the band members said they felt they had changed significantly after they released Women in Music Pt. III. Part of that was because Danielle moved in with Alana while they worked on the next album.
Alana joked about how funny it was to be dating in her 30s while living with her sister, explaining the situation to potential partners. At the same time, she got a first-hand look at how consuming the album-making process was for Danielle, which she found inspiring. Discussing the workings of the album, Este said:
“It was pretty freeing to just be in the room with an acoustic guitar, a bunch of acoustic guitars, and just drums.”
Alana Haim believes this new album captured their vision more accurately than anything they have done before. The recording process felt completely different this time. Danielle acknowledged that this was because they no longer worked with Ariel Rechtshaid. She added that collaborating with Rostam felt more fast-paced and energetic, in contrast to their previous experiences.
As per I-D, the album’s opener, Gone, gives off post-breakup energy. Danielle Haim’s lyrics send a defiant message about self-acceptance and refusing to disappear.
The track incorporates a gospel-infused sample from George Michael’s Freedom! ’90. Inspired by Beyoncé’s use of samples, Danielle said the song was not an act of defiance, but as a declaration of moving forward on her own terms.
