"This is dedicated to the people in my life": Bon Iver's Justin Vernon opens up about new album 'Sable, fAble'

Justin Vernon, the man behind Bon Iver, has put out his latest musical project titled SABLE, fABLE. Known for his talented songwriting and genre-blending artistry, Vernon’s latest work is a personal chapter in his musical story.

In a recent chat with a Colorado Sound radio host, Vernon put forth that SABLE, fABLE is a break from the past -- less focused on what the audience wants and more on the honest outpouring of self. It is a change in tone and intent that comes from a place of wanting to honor the people and memories that have shaped his life.

Show host Ben asked,

"Your new album, SABLE, fABLE, is your first in six years. What would you say separates this album from your previous work?"

Justin Vernon replied,

"I think this one’s for me. I’ve often just cared about the truth of the songs and everything like that and making stuff for people. But more than anything, this one’s for me. This is dedicated to the people in my life that I love. And really, it’s about my own personal story and my own growth. And more than ever, this is, like I said, it’s for me."

Ben further asked,

"Speaking of albums, I know your self-titled album was, how do I even describe this? It was recorded at an old veterinarian clinic that you bought with your brother. How did that come about?"

Vernon answered,

"Well, I’m sitting in said building, although it’s been renovated many times. But it’s just two miles down the road from where I grew up. It was about 2008, and we just moved into this really weird place with an old kind of cruddy indoor pool, and we just started making a studio, and we’ve been making it ever since."

The album SABLE, fABLE was crafted in a unique setting: an old veterinary clinic turned studio, a building Vernon purchased with his brother near his hometown. Though now renovated, the studio remains a meaningful space that reflects his creative origins and evolution. It’s within these walls that Vernon continues to experiment, blending tradition with innovation.
