Rapper Lil Wayne is opening up about losing the Super Bowl LIX halftime performance bid to Kendrick Lamar.
In a recent interview for Rolling Stone’s April 17 cover story, Lil Wayne said that he would not perform during the Super Bowl halftime in the future after the infamous February 2025 snub. The rapper said,
“They stole that feeling. I don’t want to do it. It was perfect.”
The 42-year-old rapper was hopeful of performing during the Super Bowl LIX halftime, which took place at the Caesars Superdome in his hometown of New Orleans.

A Lil Wayne-led halftime show at the Super Bowl LIX was largely favored by the artist’s fans as well. In his public appearances and during interviews, Wayne was heard hyping up a possible Super Bowl appearance. In 2024, during a podcast 4HUNNID with YG, Wayne said,
"We all praying, you know, we keeping our fingers crossed. I’m working hard. I’m going to make sure this next album and everything I do is killer, so I’m going make it very hard for them to, I want to just make it hard for them not to highlight the boy.”
In September 2024, however, the NFL announced that the Humble rapper Kendrick Lamar will be headlining the Super Bowl halftime show in February 2025.
Lil Wayne’s response to Kendrick Lamar as the Super Bowl LIX halftime show headliner
Lil Wayne responded to Kendrick Lamar being chosen to lead the Super Bowl halftime show in a video posted to his Instagram page. In the video, the rapper can be seen sitting and talking solemnly. He said,
“That hurt, it hurt a lot I thought there was nothing better that spot, on that stage, on that platform…I blame myself for not being mentally prepared for a letdown and for automatically mentally putting myself in that position like somebody told me that was my position”
He did thank his fans and well-wishers for their support, adding,
“Thanks to all of my peers, my friends, my family, my homies on the sports television and everybody repping me. I really appreciate that, I really do”

Later that year, USA Today reported that during an interview, Wayne revealed that he had spoken to Lamar. The news outlet reported that Wayne said about talking to Lamar:
“I’ve spoken to him, and I wished him all the best, and I told him he better kill it…You better kill it. You got to kill it.”
As per the rapper’s recent conversation with Rolling Stone, he avoided watching the show in February. Instead, he shared that he spent some quality time with his protégé and frequent collaborator, Lil Twist, playing pool. About the show, he added,
"Every time I looked, it was nothing that made me want to go inside and see what was going on.”
According to Rolling Stone, Wayne also admitted that he was advised by the NFL to attend more public events in order to be chosen as the Super Bowl halftime show headliner. According to the magazine, after the disappointing reveal that he wouldn’t be chosen after all, though, Wayne said,
“All of a sudden, according to them, they got curved. So, I’m going to have to just settle with whatever they say”
Lil Wayne’s assertion that he would not perform in any Super Bowl halftime shows in the future is sure to be disappointing for his fans, who were expecting to see him on the field at his native New Orleans.
