In a new Rolling Stone cover story published on April 17, 2025, rapper Lil Wayne slammed NFL for not asking him to perform at the 2025 Super Bowl Halftime Show in his hometown, New Orleans.
The rapper lost the gig to Kendrick Lamar, who performed at Super Bowl LIX in February at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans in February, 2025. Wayne mentioned that he did speak to NFL and they had encouraged him to amp up his public persona to perform at the Halftime Show but ended up not getting the spot,
"To perform, it's a bunch of things they're going to tell you to do and not do, assess to kiss and not kiss. If you notice, I was a part of things I've never been a part of like (Michael) Rubin's all-white parties. I'm doing s**t with Tom Brady. That was all for (the Super Bowl). You ain't never seen me in them types of venues."
However, despite trying his best to put himself out there, he was replaced by Lamar:
"They stole that feeling. I don't want to do it. It was perfect."
The rapper also insinuated that the show could have been better with him on it,
"They coulda had some music...But instead they got rappin' They f***ed up."
Lil Wayne says he blames himself for not preparing for a "letdown"
In September, 2024, Roc Nation, NFL, and Apple Music officially announced Kendrick Lamar as the Super Bowl Halftime performer. Lil Wayne, while responding to the news, posted a video expressing his disappointment and mentioning that "it hurt a whole lot":
"I blame myself for not being mentally prepared for a letwdown and for automatically mentally putting myself in that position like somebody told me that was my position."
Lil Wayne also revealed that someone from NFL also told him that they were not "in charge" and it was Jay-Z's company, Roc Nation, that had the final say. In January, Roc Nation CEO Desiree Perez mentioned in an interview released by NOLA.com that Lamar was the "right person" for the halftime show.
Desiree also revealed the selection process and mentioned that Jay-Z presents a shortlist of possible halftime show performers, and also has a say in deciding on a performer.
However, despite his disappointment at the time, Wayne was a good sport, and in a December, 2024 appearance on The Skip Bayless Show, mentioned that he had spoken to Lamar and "wished him all the best" and "told him (he) better kill it."
