Lauryn Hill brought Doechii onstage in Miami for a surprise collaboration of her hit song, Doo Wop at Miami's Jazz in the Gardens music festival on March 8. While welcoming the artist on stage, Hill mentioned:
"I want to introduce y'all to another sister."
The rapper's performance on Lauryn's stage comes after she won a Grammy for Best Rap Album last month and delivered an electrifying performance on stage.
After the performance, Doechii or Jaylah Ji'mya Hickmon took to Instagram on March 9 to note how much the performance meant to her:
"The first full length album I ever listened to was The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. My mom would play it from the top to bottom everyday on my way to school for years.
After videos of her performance went viral on social media, netizens took to X to express their adoration for the Grammy winner saying:
"The girl is on a legendary run," an X user noted.
"Lauryn Hill co-signing Doechii on stage is lowkey on the same level when Snoop and Game gave the torch to Kendrick…I’m JUST saying.." - a user mentioned.
"Gotta love Doechii, the hate is just forced really" - another user mentioned.
"IM GAGGING THIS IS HUGE FOR HER" - another user expressed.
"Lowkey a passing of the torch moment for Doechii" - another user noted.
"The girl is on a legendary run," a netizen wrote.
"I would sing your songs as if I wrote them," says Doechii
After Doechii's viral performance on Lauryn Hill's stage at Miami's Jazz in the Gardens music festival on March 8, Hickmon took to Instagram to express her happiness while singing praises for Hill:
"I would sing your songs as if I wrote them, imagining myelf of stage. Each song deepened my love for music and my curiosity to write raps. Mu favorite lyric in Doo Wop is 'don't be a hard rock when you really are a gem' that stuck with me anytime I wanted to 'get even' or harden my heart towards those who wronged me."
Hickmon will be receiving the 2025 Woman of the Year award at the annual Billboard Women in Music event on March 29 at YouTube Theater at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, California.
Hannah Karp, editorial director of Billboard, while announcing Hickmon as a winner mentioned in a statement that the singer has "quickly gained recognition in the music industry for her bold creativity and impressive talent" after winning the Billboard Women in Music Rising Star Award in 2023.
Hickmon is the second rap artist to win the accolade after Cardi B.
