Lorde is currently gearing up for the release of her brand new single What was That? this Friday. While the "Green Light" singer has collaborated with many artists over the last four years, this single marks her first solo release since 2021, back when she had released "Solar Power."

The Grammy winning singer announced the new track What was That? on TikTok, teasing a snippet from the song. Later, she confirmed the release on Instagram with a post to mark the occasion. In the caption, she wrote:

"My new song What Was That. Out soon.”

According to Rolling Stones, Lorde connected with her fans on social media by announcing the impromptu meetup at Washington State Park, with a simple message, "Meet me in the park. Tonight at 7pm xx." This resulted in a large turnout of fans at the location, though they were soon asked to leave. In a statement by a spokesperson for the New York DCPI, no prior permission had been obtained for the gathering, prompting police to disperse the unscheduled event. They stated:

"A sound and parks permit is required to have a concert in a New York City Park. This individual did not possess either. Organizers of the event were informed they could not perform and they left the location.”

Acording to Billboard, Lorde herself arrived at the park after 8:30 PM, and fans were treated to the entirity of her song "What Was That?," which was performed by Dev Hynes. She even addressed her loyal fans, by saying:

"You guys are so amazing. I love you so much.”

Lorde's impromptu concert at Washington State Park, New York comes just a week after her surprise appearance at Coachella, when she joined Charlie XCX to perform their hit single, "Girl, So Confusing."
