Playboi Carti 's text exchange with producer Wheezy about potentially sampling Jay-Z recently went viral. The news, surfacing on Carti’s Instagram Stories, went viral almost immediately, with fans wondering whether the album was actually done. One frustrated fan on Twitter encapsulated the sentiment: “So the album ain’t even done?”

Who is Playboi Carti?
Rapper and songwriter Playboi Carti was born Jordan Terrell Carter and is known for his experimental sound, energetic ad-libs, and brooding persona. He rose to fame with his 2017 self-titled mixtape, which made Carti quickly climb the ranks to become one of the most significant figures in contemporary hip-hop. His 2018 album Die Lit crystallized his sound, and 2020’s Whole Lotta Red entered at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, albeit to mixed reactions at the time.
Playboi Carti is notorious for unpredictable artistic decisions, frequently leaving listeners holding their breaths between releases, dropping vague teasers, and taking multi-year breaks. His loyal fan base, though, remains patient - if at times with ruffled feathers - and eagerly anticipates I Am Music, wishing for the eventual hype to live up to the album.

The Long Wait for I Am Music
The path to I Am Music has not been easy. Originally teased under the name Narcissist in August 2021, the album received several name changes before landing on its current title. And while there have been various snippets, surprise music videos, and live performances of unreleased material, Playboi Carti has yet to confirm a proper release date.
In December 2024, at Rolling Loud’s 10th anniversary at its original location in Miami, Playboi Carti took the stage to perform five unreleased tracks, including collaborations with Travis Scott and The Weeknd. If the performances thrilled fans, they did little to illuminate the timing of the album’s release. Frustration finally boiled over by late December when #IAMLIAR began trending across social media, with fans accusing Playboi Carti of dragging his feet on the project yet again.
And now this new info on him still working on samples further agitated his fans as it suggests I Am Music may not be as close to a release as they hoped.
But after Playboi Carti's story with the text message from Wheezy blew up with fans commenting about the delay, Carti posted another story, clarifying that the text shown in the story was connected to something else altogether and that the album is done. With that, some fans now think that there might be 2 separate albums, whereas some still don't believe even one exists.
As the speculation builds, one question remains. When is Playboi Carti releasing I Am Music? Is it really releasing this Friday as it was rumored? And do you all look forward to it?
