Will Smith is sharing the advice he got from Kendrick Lamar and Jay Z with regards to his upcoming album.
The veteran actor, who is scheduled to drop his album, Based on a True Story soon, sat down for an interview with Sway in the Morning's Sway Calloway and Heather B. Speaking in front of a live audience at The Hard Rock Cafe in Philadelphia, he reflected on the advice the hip-hop icons shared with him:
“Jay said, ‘Don’t fake your story,’” Will said of the advice from Jay-Z. “He was like, ‘You gotta say what’s true for you and you’ll be looking at the younger rappers and you’ll want that to be true to you, but you don’t live like that. Be true to your story. Tell your story.’ And that’s where I got the ‘Based on a True Story,’ from Jay.”
As for what Kendrick told him, he said:
“And Kendrick said, ‘Man, just say that sh*t you always been f—ing scared to say’."

Will Smith's Based on a True Story is slated to come out on March 28, and it will be his first full-length project in two decades. He dropped his last album, Lost and Found, in 2005.
The LP features 14 tracks and vocals from figures like his son, Jade, Big Sean, Teyana Taylor, and Kanye West's choir. He will also be hitting the road in support of his album for a tour across Europe and the U.K.
In other news, the Oscar-winning actor was honored with a street being named after him in West Philadelphia, where he was born and raised. Just this Wednesday, Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker and other city leaders gathered to celebrate the Grammy winner, as they renamed the street located next to Smith's old high school.
“Philly, I love you. I am yours. You are mine,” Smith said at the ceremony.
He also reflected on the lessons he learned from his parents about hard work and education before he made it big as an actor and musician:
“Nobody gets an easy ride,” he said. “That was one of the things these streets of Philadelphia taught me: that there's nothing wrong with a hard day's work.”
In the past, Will Smith has won Grammys for Summertime, Men In Black, Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It, and Parents Just Don’t Understand.
