Taylor Swift has once again made history. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) has crowned her the Global Recording Artist of the Year 2024, marking the third consecutive year and the fifth time that she has received the honor.

Her latest album, The Tortured Poets Department, topped IFPI’s Global Album Chart and also led in vinyl sales, streaming, and overall units sold. This success follows a record-breaking year for the artist fueled by The Eras Tour, which drove notable fan engagement across streaming platforms.

Since its April 2024 release, The Tortured Poets Department has gained notable acclamation in the global music landscape. The album became the most-streamed album in a single day in 2024 within 12 hours of its debut. Additionally, it sold 5.6 million copies worldwide, which secured Taylor Swift’s place at the top of IFPI’s major album charts:

  • Global Album Chart (Overall sales and streaming performance)
  • Global Vinyl Album Chart (Highest-selling vinyl record of the year)
  • Global Streaming Album Chart (Most-streamed album globally)
  • Global Album Sales Chart (Best-selling physical and digital album)

Notably, Swift’s previous albums, including 1989 (Taylor’s Version) (2023), Midnights (2022), folklore (2020), evermore (2020), and Lover (2019), also found spots in IFPI’s Top 20 Global Vinyl Album Chart.

Fans react to Taylor Swift's IFPI record

Pop Base took to its X (formerly Twitter) handle to share the news of her winning the title, captioning,

"‘The Tortured Poets Department’ by Taylor Swift was the best-selling album of 2024 worldwide, IFPI reports. It leads in overall units, vinyl sales, streaming and pure sales."

Fans were quick to react to the post with comments carrying admiration for Taylor Swift. One such fan commented,

"I’m happy for her

Below are what some other X users had to comment:

"Isn't her album always the best selling one?", noted a netizen.
"ALBUM OF THE YEAR", shared another.
"Okay, the real question I have is which vinyl? The original…or does this include every version she put out that contained different bonus tracks?", questioned a third.
"Taylor Swift does it again! 'The Tortured Poets Department' sweeping across all metrics, truly a testament to her artistry. Congratulations!", lauded a fourth.
"One of her best albums.", declared a fifth.
"Tylor swift best artist of all time.", joined in a sixth.

Much of Swift’s success in 2024 can be attributed to The Eras Tour, which became the highest-grossing tour of all time with $2.2 billion in revenue, according to Pollstar’s 2024 Year-End Analysis. The tour created a wave of interest in Swift’s discography that led to an astronomical soar in her streaming numbers across multiple platforms.

Since the IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year Award's introduction in 2013, Taylor Swift has now won it more times than any other artist, surpassing previous multi-time winners such as Drake and BTS.
