Beloved punk rock pioneer and award-winning author Patti Smith is officially set to release a new memoir this fall. The book is titled Bread of Angels. It will be published on November 4, 2025, by Random House.

Bread of Angels is going to be Patti Smith's third memoir, following Just Kids (2010) and M Train (2015). As reports suggest, both were well acclaimed by fans and enthusiasts worldwide. The upcoming book will cover memorable incidents from her early life and teenage years, personal loss, motherhood, and her creative journey, among others.

Patti took to her official Instagram account to share a photo of herself with her parents, captioning:

"This is with my mother and father who inspired much of my next book Bread of Angels. The memoir, a bright and dark dance of life, will be published on November 4th, by Random House."

AP reports that in a statement, Patti Smith mentioned:

"It took a decade to write this book, grappling with the beauty and sorrow of a lifetime. I'm hoping that people will find something they need."

Per Rolling Stone, a synopsis of the upcoming memoir Bread of Angels is as follows:

"As Smith suffers profound losses, grief and gratitude are braided through years of caring for her children, rebuilding her life, and, finally, writing again — the one constant on a path driven by artistic freedom and the power of the imagination to transform the mundane into the beautiful, the commonplace into the magical, and pain into hope."

On the other hand, Bloomsbury Trade has taken the role of publishing Patti Smith's upcoming book in the UK. Alexis Kirschbaum is the head of the publication. In a statement shared with The Guardian, Alex mentioned:

"Patti Smith is a living legend. While her lyrics and music have inspired generations of listeners, her books have made her one of the most cherished and influential writers of the last 50 years. Bread of Angels confirms her position as a writer."

One of the key elements of Bread of Angels is Patti Smith's relationship with her late husband

Patti's husband, Fred "Sonic" Smith, was a guitarist for the MC5. The two married in 1980 and later moved to Michigan, near Lake Saint Clair, Billboard reports.

The author describes this chapter as one featuring "new adventures" and heartbreak. Fred passed away in 1994. The memoir's November 4 release date is also significant as it is both the anniversary of Fred's death and the birthday of Smith's friend and collaborator, photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.

Patti Smith's earlier memoir, Just Kids, won the National Book Award. It gave readers a look into her friendship with Mapplethorpe and their life as young artists in 1970s New York.

On the other hand, M Train was released in 2015. It was relatively more introspective, reports suggest.

The announcement of the memoir comes months ahead of her Horses 50th Anniversary Tour, which kicks off in October 2025 across Europe and continues through the U.S. in November 2025. She will perform the entire album live.
