Valerie Bertinelli got candid about not wanting a biopic on her late ex husband, guitarist Eddie Van Halen. The Emmy nominated actress, during her appearance on the Drew Barrymore Show, revealed how she is not on board with a biopic being made on Eddie Van Halen. During the conversation, Bertinelli says:
"Oh, God, I hope they never do one of Van Halen."
Eddie Van Halen founded the rock band Van Halen in 1972 with his brother Alex. The primary songwriter and guitarist for the band, he is regarded by fans as one of the best guitarists in rock history. Eddie Van Halen was ranked 4th in Rolling Stones' list of "250 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" in 2023.
Valerie Bertinelli and legendary guitarist Eddie Van Halen married in 1981. The couple was married for twenty six years before divorcing in 2007. They had one child, Wolfgang Van Halen, named after his father's favorite composer, Mortzart, who was born on 16 March 1991. Wolfgang Van Halen is also a musician in his own right, having formed his own band, Mammoth WVH.
More about Valerie Bertinelli's conversation with Drew Barrymore
Valerie Bertinelli, during her appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, talked about the several things, one of them being commenting on the upcoming Beatles biopic directed by Sam Mendes. The "One Day at a Time" actress confessed that she herself was once equated with Yoko Yono. She added that they were similar, as they were both criticized by fans for allegedly breaking up the bands of their respective partners.
"Well, I have been called Yoko in my day. As if I had the power to break up a band. Yoko's an amazing woman. She's an artist, and she did not break up the Beatles. The Beatles had their own issues."
During the conversation, Barrymore quipped:
"Oh you know they’re gonna do one of Van Halen.”
To this Bertinelli says
"Make sure I’m dead. I told Wolfie, ‘Make sure I’m dead."
The "Hot in Cleveland" actress further added that it is not her who was responsible for Van Halen breaking up, but rather the internal politics of the band. She says that everyone in the band has their "own issues," but everyone generally blamed guitarist Van Halen, who is no longer around to defend himself. The guitarist passed away in 2020 from complications of throat cancer.
During the conversation, Valerie Bertinelli says:
"It wasn't all Ed's fault. Okay, I'm just going to put that out there. Everybody loves to blame Ed, and he can't defend himself. Nowhere near was it all Ed's fault... He just wanted to write his music and play his music."
Although not one to support the idea of a biopic on Van Halen, Valerie Bertinelli added that if one were to be made Selena Gomez could play her, before calling out to Selena, directly and asking her not to do it.
