Lizzo will reportedly play Sister Rosetta Tharpe in the upcoming Amazon MGM Studios-produced biopic titled Rosetta. An exclusive release by Deadline Magazine on March 24. 2025, revealed that the Feelin’ Good As Hell hitmaker would hit our screens as a Rock & Roll legend sometime in the near future.

The biopic is still in the works and being written by Natalie Chadez and Kwynn Perry. According to Deadline, the movie tells the story of the making of the legend Rosetta Tharpe and how she, in turn, influenced other greats like Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Johnny Cash, and others.

Lizzo will produce the project alongside Nina Yang Bongiovi and Forest Whitaker.

More details on the upcoming Rosetta biopic starring Lizzo

The project featuring Lizzo is described as follows:

“Rosetta captures a pivotal period in her life — one of groundbreaking innovation, defiant passion, and secret love. As she shatters musical boundaries with her signature guitar sound,"

It continues:

"Rosetta must navigate societal constraints, conceal her love for another woman, and ultimately transform a wedding into one of the most legendary concerts in history — the first stadium show.”

The biopic will tell the story of how Rosetta Tharpe became a major force in the industry and how she influenced several of the greats. Rosetta Tharpe was born on March 20, 1915. The gospel singer grew popular in the 1930s and 40s. Her recordings blended deep spiritual lyrics with electric guitar music.

She became a household name and one of the first gospel artists to have a significant fan following amongst Rock and Roll and rhythm and blues audiences. She has been referred to as the “Godmother of rock and roll” and “the original soul sister.”

The Arkansas native performed gospel songs in nightclubs and was among the first recording artists of her era to incorporate heavy guitar distortion in her music. This had an impact on the discovery of electric and British blues.

Her 1938 and 1939 mega-hit Rock Me was criticized by conventional gospel artists. In May 2018, Tharpe was posthumously inducted as an early influence into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
