The singer began his dance training at an early age. After ballet training, he went for hip-hop dance. In 2011, SM Entertainment announced him as the first member of their boy band EXO. The band was later joined by Suho, D.O., Lay Zhang, Xiumin, Chen, and others.
In July 2020, SM Entertainment announced that KAI would be making his solo album debut later that year. In November 2020, he released his first extended play and titled it KAI. The mini album's lead song was Mmmh. The K-pop star's second mini-album came exactly a year later in 2021. Titled Peaches, the album made it at number 3 on the Gaon Album Chart.
For his third mini-album, fans had to wait for a bit longer than a year. In February 2023, it was announced that the singer was planning on releasing another extended play, and on March 13, he did. The EP was titled Rover and had a lead song of the same name.
In May 2023, it was announced that the singer's military enlistment was finalized. In South Korea, every male has to undergo military training between 18 and 35 years of age. The training goes on for about 18 to 21 months. Some exceptions for athletes and idols were made in the past.
The singer's military training ended in February 2025, following which he soon held a live session on various social media platforms. His upcoming album is expected to break records as it marks his comeback.
