Liam Payne's untimely death on October 16, 2024, shocked the world. The figure at the center of the scandal surrounding the singer’s death, which took place in Buenos Aires, is Rogelio “Roger” Nores.

Nores’ lawyer recently revealed that his client had written to Payne’s family in the time leading up to his death, encouraging the singer to consider rehabilitation because of his issues with substance abuse.

"You start seeing a chain of events and it was just bad luck, it happened in a way that ended in tragedy."

Toxicology reports show that Liam Payne had alcohol, cocaine, and an antidepressant in his system when he died. Though authorities investigated what led up to the incident, reports indicate that Payne’s substance use may have been a major factor contributing to the tragedy.

Roger Nores’ Initial Legal Charges

After Payne’s death, Argentine authorities filed charges of criminal negligence against Roger Nores and two hotel employees. Nores, a close friend of Liam Payne, was believed to have known about the singer’s condition before the fatal fall. However, in February 2025, an Argentine court dismissed all charges against Nores and the hotel staff, ruling there was insufficient evidence to support claims of negligence.

Nores later spoke publicly about Liam Payne’s struggles, noting how difficult it is to help a friend caught up in substance abuse. He added that while support can be provided, the decision to seek help ultimately rests with the individual.

Nores’s Attorney Says Rehab Was Recommended Before The Incident

In a statement, Nores’ attorney, Rafael Cuneo Libarona, said Nores contacted Payne’s family in October 2024, just before the singer died. The email suggested that Payne might need to enter a rehab program and expressed concerns for his well-being. This disclosure implies that Nores was aware of Payne’s struggles with addiction and attempted to intervene in some way.

Despite Nores’ efforts to assist, the situation ultimately ended in tragedy. In an interview with Reuters, Nores stated that the sudden death of a prominent figure often leaves people searching for answers or a convenient target. He described the emotional toll of witnessing what happened and insisted he was not responsible for Liam Payne’s decisions.

Defamatory Lawsuit

Though Nores was found not legally culpable in Argentina, legal disputes between him and Payne’s family have heightened. An £8 million defamation suit has been filed against Liam Payne’s father, Geoff Payne, who is accused of making false comments about Nores’ role in Payne’s life and care. Nores argues that while he was a close friend, he is not responsible for Payne’s personal choices and decisions before his death.

Despite the lawsuit, Nores has stated that he remains in touch with some of Payne’s relatives and continues to support them. However, the case has further complicated an already difficult situation for Payne’s loved ones.
