Dolly Parton is a country icon, with a music catalogue that continues to enrich lives. Her Dollywood theme park testifies her lasting impact, too, beyond her countless hits. Beyond that, her philanthropic work has endeared her to countless people.
In recent news involving Parton, her fans are pushing to have Nashville International Airport renamed in her honor after a bill to name it after President Trump has failed to pass. The official petition reads:
"As proud citizens of Tennessee, we are motivated by our deep-rooted admiration for the national treasure and Tennessee legend, Dolly Parton. She is not only a celebrated artist who encourages love, acceptance, and goodwill through her music but also a philanthropist, known for her countless contributions to society. It is only fitting that an institution as significant as Nashville International Airport carries the name of such a remarkable woman."
More on the renaming of Nashville International Airport
The official petition has been dubbed as 'Rename Nashville International Airport to Dolly Parton International Airport,' and was posted on Change.org on January 21. Since being uploaded, it has amassed over 51,000 signatures in support of the official name change.
The petition’s chief organizers, Lydia Popovich and Dan Dion, are self-professed superfans of Parton who vocalized their “deep-rooted admiration for the national treasure” on the petition. They even joked on the petition itself that upon changing the airport’s name:
“We could all be Departin’ from Parton!!”
The online document also included the following excerpt, furthering Parton’s case:
"Dolly has made substantial impacts on thousands of lives, especially through her Imagination Library program, which has gifted over 100 million books to children since it began in 1995. Dolly's philanthropic efforts, her outstanding influence in the music industry, and the love she has instilled in our hearts through her actions and songs, truly make her a deserving candidate to have the Nashville International Airport named after her. We request that the airport’s name be changed to Dolly Parton International Airport to honor an icon who has given so much to our state and to the world. Sign the petition to make this change a reality."
In an interesting bit of trivia, Nashville International Airport carries the airport code BNA, which stands for Berry Field Nashville Airport. Its previous namesake was Army veteran Col. Harry Smith Berry, who was decorated for his contributions in World War I and World War II. The airport was originally given its name in 1937, which has held up until today, despite Colonel Berry having passed in 1967.
It is unclear how this developing situation will pan out, although the movement for the name change seems to be mounting by the day.
