Pop star Rihanna has been open about her life with the kids she shares with rapper A$AP Rocky. In an interview with Harper's Bazaar published on February 22, 2025, the singer shared a glimpse of her life as a mother and an artist.
The We Found Love singer has two kids with Rocky. They welcomed their first son RZA Athelston Mayers in 2022, who is about to turn three. They had their second son, Riot Rose Mayers, in 2023.
Speaking to the magazine, RiRi praised Rocky saying his pureness and charm made him a great person in the role of a father. However, she had one complaint as she felt her sons were fonder of their father than her. Rihanna said:
“I’m annoyed because my sons sometimes just live for him more than they live for me.”
She continued:
“And I’m like, ‘Did you know who cooked you? Do you know who pushed you out?’ And they love him, but when I see it, oh, it’s the best.”
During the interview, a quick look at Rihanna's phone showed that her kids’ pictures were on the screen. When asked to describe them beyond the glimpses seen on social media, she shared that RZA had a deeply empathetic nature and a love for music, melodies, books, and water, whether it was time for bath, swimming, or the beach.
Riot, on the other hand, had a lively and humorous personality. From the moment he woke up, he would squeal and scream. Rihanna joked that he acted as her personal alarm clock, making it clear he wouldn’t take no for an answer. She noted how his bold personality reminded her of herself.
Rihanna and A$AP Rocky’s kids: Riot’s name and RZA’s struggles as an elder brother
Riot’s name came from Pharrell Williams, who had collaborated with A$AP Rocky on a song of the same title in 2023. He had originally suggested the name under the assumption they were having a girl based on online rumors.
Rihanna described Pharrell as someone who always dug deep, never stopping at a simple explanation but exploring the meaning, history, and even the energy of a name. She also reflected on RZA’s initial struggle with adjusting to his baby brother, a common experience for older siblings.
At first, Riot seemed to accept his role as the younger sibling, but over time, he realized he was in charge. Toward the end of the interview, Rihanna acknowledged that aging came with its challenges, but she also saw it as a privilege.
Despite the unpredictable nature of her life, she managed to create the family life she had always wanted and understood its value. She believed her legacy was something she shaped in the present moment, focusing on how she spent her time, engaged with people around her, and created meaningful memories.
Rather than prioritizing material possessions, she said that she preferred investing in experiences, as no one could take those from her. According to her, while belongings could be lost or stolen, memories, feelings, and even certain scents tied to special moments would always remain.
