A brief look into the feud between Lil Wayne and Birdman

At the start of his career, Lil Wayne joined Cash Money Records, where he was under Birdman's mentorship. Eventually, Wayne became the label's face and took it to new heights. As the head of Young Money, he was responsible for introducing future megastars like Nicki Minaj and Drake.

According to Vibe, despite their very public claims of having a father-son relationship, Lil Wayne and Birdman quietly feuded over financial and creative differences.

The feud between Birdman and Wayne started in December 2014 when Wayne publicly criticized Cash Money Records, he accused the label of holding up release plans for Tha Carter V. He referred to himself as a "prisoner," asking to be released from the contract.

The relationship between the two rappers got worse in early 2015, when Wayne sued the label for $51 million, asking to be released from his contract and let go of all the Young Money artists with him, as reported by Vibe.

The conflict worsened when an indictment accused Birdman and Young Thug of conspiring to kill Wayne in an April 2015 tour bus shooting. From that point forward many lawsuits were filed with Lil Wayne suing Universal Music Group for $40 million and he claimed that Birdman diverted money that belonged to Young Money.

After several years of legal battle between Wayne and Birdman, the artist finally settled his lawsuit against the label as well as Universal Music Group in June 2018, securing a multi-million dollar payout and full ownership of Tha Carter V.
