Fyre Fest 2, the reboot of the infamous 2017 Fyre Festival, has been postponed. The organizers blamed Mexican government officials for the sudden change. They claimed that local authorities in Playa del Carmen accepted payments, issued permits, and helped promote the event, only to later deny any involvement.
Billy McFarland, who was jailed after the original Fyre Festival failed, is behind this new version. He and his team said that the local government supported the planning for months. However, officials then changed their position and acted as if they had no connection to the event. As a result, the team had no choice but to postpone and find a new location.
Government agencies in Mexico, however, denied these claims. The Quintana Roo Tourism Department and Playa del Carmen’s local officials said they never approved the event. The two sides now have differing accounts, and the future of Fyre Fest 2 remains unclear.
Why did Fyre Fest 2 get postponed?
The festival was initially planned for May 30 to June 2, 2025. First, it was going to take place on Isla Mujeres. Later, the venue was changed to Playa del Carmen. Organizers stated that this move was made possible due to improved support from the local government.
Then, things changed. The local government in Playa del Carmen publicly stated that they were unaware of Fyre Festival 2. They stated that no permits were issued for such an event, which caused confusion. Fyre Fest organizers posted documents online to provide proof of approval. Still, some people questioned whether the documents were genuine.
Nick Lowe, a representative of Fyre Festival 2, said that the government took money and issued permits, only to deny it later. He called it dishonest and said it was akin to “theft.” Due to this situation, the organizers postponed the event and began searching for a new venue.
What is the Mexican Government saying?
According to a report published by the BBC on April 17, 2025, the Quintana Roo Tourism Department and Playa del Carmen officials stated that they never gave any official approval for Fyre Festival 2. They said no event with that name was ever authorized. They also claimed they were not involved in any planning.
Even though organizers posted documents claiming they had obtained permits, Mexican authorities stated that they had not seen those papers. One document showed approval for only 250 guests. Reports indicated that over 1,800 tickets were sold, raising questions about how the event was being managed.
The government’s public denial differs significantly from what Fyre Fest organizers claim. The truth is still unclear. There may be more to the story that has yet to be revealed. For now, there is no agreement between the two sides.

What’s next for Fyre Fest 2?
The organizers say they are still planning to hold the festival. They have begun exploring other potential locations. These include Puerto Rico, New York City, and Turks and Caicos. A new date has not been announced yet.
Ticket holders were notified of the postponement via email. The message said refunds were being issued. It also stated that they would have the opportunity to purchase tickets again once a new location and date are confirmed.
Billy McFarland reportedly remains committed to making Fyre Fest 2 a reality. He believes this version will be successful. Due to the failure of the first Fyre Festival and McFarland’s past fraud charges, there is considerable doubt.
Currently, the festival has no set location or date. Refunds have been promised to ticket buyers. The future of Fyre Fest 2 depends on whether the team can find a new venue and rebuild trust.
