Billy McFarland’s upcoming Fyre Festival 2, set to be held on a tropical island in Cancún, Mexico, from May 30 to June 2, 2025, has been labeled as non-existent by the country’s tourism board. In an interview with The Guardian published on February 27, 2025, Edgar Gasca, a representative of the Tourism Directorate of Isla Mujeres, stated:

"We have no knowledge of this event, nor contact with any person or company about it,”

He added:

"For us, this is an event that does not exist.”

The Fyre Festival 2 tickets began selling in late February 2025, reportedly priced between $1,400 and $1.1 million. The first Fyre Festival held in 2017 resulted in multiple lawsuits against McFarland as guests complained of inadequate accommodation, poor organization, and music acts pulling out. McFarland was found guilty of fraud and convicted to 6 years in prison. The court ordered him to pay $7,220 each to 277 guests.

More details about the Fyre Festival 2 explored in the face of new controversy

The Fyre Festival 2, as described by the event’s official Instagram, is a “three-day escape to the Mexican Caribbean. The organizers promise guests the opportunity to explore the Isla Mujeres alongside their favorite talent and nights filled with musical performances.

The statement from the festival’s management also assures that the second chapter of the event will be produced by Lostnights, with 20 years of experience in event management under their belts. The statement further reads that the festival is supported by “some of the finest hospitality providers” in the Mexican Caribbean who would deliver “world-class accommodations and unforgettable experiences.”

The producers and management haven’t revealed the musical acts that will grace the festival. The Guardian reported that Edgar Gasca was at a tourism fair in Bolgotá, Colombia when he learned about the Fyre Festival 2.

The Tourism Directorate representative added that he had spoken with the Minister for Tourism in Quintana Roo and the hotels listed on the festival’s website, and they had never heard about the festival. Gasca found it odd that the organizers hadn’t reached out to the tourism directorate for a festival of that magnitude:

"The organizers didn’t even bother to approach the authorities. It’s very strange because any manager knows that if you’re going to hold an event, let alone a massive event, you need municipal authorization."

He added:

“I think they thought they would just announce it and see if it got traction, then ask for the permits halfway down the path. It’s a bit of a naive way to think.”
