Brand New stopped making music and performing after the accusations against their lead singer and guitarist, Jesse Lacey, emerged. The band was in the middle of their UK tour in 2017 and had to cancel because of the claims. Not just that, Brand New songs were also removed from Spotify after two women came forward asserting s**ual allegations against Lacey.

Lacey responded to these allegations by apologizing to all those he had hurt and affected. In his apology, Lacey said he is sorry for "the actions of my past". He continues by saying that he,

"have caused pain and harm to a number of people, and I want to say that I am absolutely sorry".

He added,

“I do not stand in defense of myself nor do I forgive myself. I was selfish, narcissistic, and insensitive in my past, and there are a number of people who have had to shoulder the burden of my failures.

He ended the apology by saying,

“I apologise for the hurt I have caused, and hope to be able to take the correct actions to earn forgiveness and trust.”

Brand New will officially reunite as a band in March 2025. Before that, in December 2024, they played a surprise mini-show at Nashville’s Eastside Bowl. During the performance, they showcased new songs, leading some fans to believe that Brand New will be back together shortly.
