Billie Joe Armstrong surprised the Coachella crowd on April 12 with an unexpected show during the afternoon performance of the rock band, The Go Go's.

Just a few hours before Green Day took the main stage, Armstrong stepped out on stage with The Go-Go's. Together, they hit the beat with the popular 1984 number, Head over Heels.

After the performance, he shared his excitement online, posting a photo taken backstage with the band. He wrote:

“Head over heels after playing with @officialgogos at @coachella."

His post also included several photos from the show, including a shot of the setlist.

The Go-Go’s posted on Instagram after the show, too. They snapped a selfie with Billie Joe Armstrong and captioned it:

“We had the time of our lives!”

Billie Joe Armstrong’s participation was teased earlier in the day via Green Day’s Instagram account, where he hinted at a “special surprise” and encouraged fans to catch The Go-Go’s set.

Billie Joe Armstrong performance at Coachella 2025

Coachella 2025 is happening over two weekends — April 11–13 and April 18–20. Green Day is the main act on Saturdays, while performers include Charli XCX, Anitta, Clairo, ENHYPEN, Jimmy Eat World, and T-Pain.

Talking to Billboard before the big event, Billie Joe Armstrong remarked:

“Death, taxes and… rock n roll,. In this world gone sideways we know one thing for certain – rock n roll is forever, and its spirit is needed now more than ever. So bring your rage, your hope, and your loudest voice. Coachella, let’s have the time of our lives.”

The Go-Go’s return with a powerful performance and a touching tribute to Clem Burke

The Go-Go’s returned to the spotlight this week with a powerful comeback that blended nostalgia, tribute, and star-powered collaboration. They put on their first show since 2022 at Coachella and at The Roxy Theatre, making it a special tribute show.

Performing on Saturday afternoon (April 12) at Coachella’s Outdoor Theatre stage, the pioneering all-female band captivated festivalgoers with a 13-song set. While the set leaned heavily on their 1981 debut Beauty and the Beat, the highlight of the show came midway, when Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong joined the group onstage.

The Roxy show marked drummer Gina Schock’s first return to the stage with the The Go-Go's since her thumb surgery. During the evening, the band paid tribute to late drummer Clem Burke’s memory, with lead vocalist Belinda Carlisle expressing how much she valued singing alongside him. Belinda told Variety, per Ultimate Classic Rock:

“I really missed Gina, [but] I loved Clem. He was so much fun to sing to, I can't tell you. I hope you're listening, Clem. But I did miss Gina!"

Bassist Kathy Valentine remembered Burke as an extended member of their musical family, noting that his presence would be sorely missed but that his music would live on. Schock, visibly moved, offered a personal dedication, praising Burke as a kind soul and expressing her gratitude for his support during her recovery. She described the performance as a celebration of his life and legacy. She called him:

"one of the kindest people I've ever known — such a gentleman at all times ... I was so lucky when I had my thumb surgery that Clem sat in with the band for me. I mean, that’s the kind of guy he was. And I dedicate this whole thing tonight to Clem Burke and the memory of him. God bless you, Clem. You're an angel, man."

As Coachella 2025 continues with headliners like Green Day, Charli XCX, and T-Pain, the Go-Go’s appearance stands out for its heartfelt energy, a mix of joy and remembrance that perfectly captures the spirit of rock and roll.
