Atlanta rapper Young Scooter, real name Kenneth Edward Bailey, died on his 39th birthday.
After the news broke, social media was flooded with allegations of the Atlanta police officers shooting him, generating massive controversy and misinformation. Since then, the Atlanta Police Department (APD) has firmly denied the claims, declaring that Young Scooter died of a fatal leg wound as he attempted to flee from the authorities.
According to All hiphop.com and Sandrarose, the false reports of a police shooting stemmed from confused eyewitness testimony and internet rumors. Eyewitness testimony of shots fired at the site bore no relation to the death of Young Scooter.
Atlanta Police were responding to reports of a domestic dispute between a woman dragged into a residence on William Nye Drive in southeast Atlanta and shots being fired. Upon police arrival, the two men who were at the scene tried to run away. While one ran back inside, Young Scooter tried to get away by jumping fences, causing his death.
Sandrarose reports that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is also going over the case for transparency and to disprove misinformation. An autopsy will be performed to validate the cause of death.
The authorities clarified that Young Scooter got injured while jumping over a fence during the escape. Although he was airlifted to Grady Marcus Trauma Center for emergency care, he succumbed to injuries. The Atlanta Medical Examiner's Office confirmed that the death resulted from an unknown cause since there is no indication of weapons being fired by the police officers involved.
