It seems we’re not saying good riddance to the Charli XCX–Green Day drama anytime soon.

It all started when the British pop innovator rocked a sash that said, “Miss Should Be Headliner,” at her afterparty on April 12 following her Y2K-fueled performance at Coachella Weekend One. The banner ruffled feathers, especially among Green Day fans, since the band was one of this year’s official headliners.

Fast-forward to Weekend Two: Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong sported a neon green BRAT cap mid-set, drawing wild cheers from the crowd.

Soon after, Green Day drummer Tré Cool was photographed wearing a sash with a handwritten text that read “Actual Headliner,” while striking a shrugging pose with his palms out.

Given the order of events, fans were quick to speculate that Cool’s move was a playful jab at Charli XCX.

The photo, reportedly taken by his wife Sara Rose Wright, instantly made the rounds on X (formerly Twitter), sparking all kinds of reactions.

“what it is still insane to me is that people understood that charli should be INSTEAD of green day, it’s never been that way,” commented @iawds61027.
“Love this .. the older generation whacking the Gen Z,” wrote @RollinWithCardi.
“Tré Cool serving "headliner realness" with that sash—Green Day said, "We’ve been punking since '94, step aside, brat!” stated @Stranger4every.
“just pouring fuel on the fire for no reason, I love you Tré,” @PSpecterLitt wrote with crying emojis.
“I hope they also take Tré Cool's move as a joke. Besides, they have the right to celebrate Green Day's continued existence, filling a main stage at #Coachella no less. I hope everyone can do it 30 years from now,” said @CER0T0NINA.

BRAT Mode: Charli XCX shares thoughts on that “Actual Headliner” sash

Tré Cool’s sash moment didn’t slip past Charli XCX. Not long after the drummer’s photo started flooding everyone’s feed, the Boom Clap singer quote-tweeted a Green Day fan account with a one-word reply:

“obsessed”

Her clipped response stirred mixed reactions. Some critics claimed she instigated the drama in the first place, while others saw her reply as cheeky, lighthearted, and totally on-brand for her BRAT era.

“You’ve got a lot to learn. There are GIANTS who’ve been playing and winning this game for decades. a relevant album doesn’t make you anyone. This game belongs to those who’ve stayed iconic for YEARS. Start with learning some respect. You’re arrogant and on the wrong path,” @hswift wrote.
“You’re music is so bland and like everything else that’ll it never last as long as Green Day lmao,” @milesdetmsu commented.
“why is nobody reading it as she’s obsessed w the picture and reading it as she’s being shady,” @interstelambert said.
“Green Day is an iconic 2000s rock band. You only had 1 good album, chill out,” @neolithicobject stated.
“Collab when?” @Benzime_ asked.

Meanwhile, both Green Day and Charli XCX closed out their Coachella 2025 sets on April 19.
