She stated that she composed over 50 songs for the Mayhem album before handpicking the final tracklist. When asked how many songs she had prepared for the album, Lady Gaga replied:
“Probably fifty, like so much music, and we didn’t use it all.”

In an interview with USA TODAY published on March 6, 2025, Gaga revealed that she worked with producers like Cirkut, Andrew Watt, and Gesaffelstein. Gaga also described Mayhem as a celebration of the meeting point of industrial music and grunge:
“This record was about celebrating bringing industrial music and grunge together, but also with these super-pop sensibilities and 2000s influences,”
Lady Gaga spoke about the different tracks on the album:
“‘Garden of Eden’ is a song about the temptation of being in the club and all the bad decisions you're seduced into making. It's kind of like Level 3 after ‘Disease’ and ‘Abracadabra’ right before we get to ‘Perfect Celebrity’ on the album when the night starts to turn a little bit.”
