NewJeans has appealed the court’s injunction against them carrying out activities outside the scope of their contract with their “former” label ADOR. On March 21, 2025, a Seoul district court upheld an injunction sought by ADOR to prevent the quintet from entering into independent contracts and performing separate music activities until the ongoing legal dispute between the parties is settled.
The girl group immediately filed a formal objection to the ruling, which the same Seoul district court subsequently upheld on April 16, 2025. The judge stated:
“Even while keeping in mind the claims and supporting materials [that the NewJeans members] are repeatedly emphasizing through this appeal, by reading through the records, one can judge that this injunction decision is just.”
According to YonHap News agency, NewJeans, now known as NJZ, have appealed the second ruling of the court on the injunction to the Seoul High Court.
The group’s legal representative stated:
"We will continue to diligently participate in the legal proceedings to come and do our utmost so that the facts can be clearly revealed.”
More details on the NewJeans and ADOR controversy as girl group appeals court injunction
Trouble began brewing between ADOR and their signees, NewJeans, after CEO Min Hee-jin was relieved of her position in August 2024. NewJeans members kicked against ADOR’s decision to terminate Hee-jin’s employment, citing the latter as the reason behind the group’s success.
On September 11, 2024, they demanded Hee-jin’s reinstatement, and when their demands weren’t met by ADOR, on November 28, the group, via an emergency press conference, subsequently declared that they had terminated their contract with ADOR.
In December 2024, ADOR filed a lawsuit against NewJeans, imploring the Seoul Central District Court to “confirm the validity of the existing contract” between the parties. Subsequently, in January 2025, ADOR filed an injunction against NewJeans “to prevent confusion and potential harm to third parties, including advertisers.”
In February 2025, the group announced that they were changing their name to NJZ and also revealed plans for their first performance at ComplexCon since departing from ADOR. In March 2025, the court upheld the injunction filed by ADOR temporarily restricting the group from moving ahead independent of their agreement with their former label.
The decision of the court caused a major setback for NewJeans/ NJZ, who announced after their ComplexCon performance that they would be going on a hiatus to respect the court’s decision:
"This stage means so much to us and every single one of you who gives us strength just by being here. It is really hard for us to say this, but this might be our last performance for a little while. Out of respect for the court’s decision, we’ve decided to pause all our activities for now."
The next hearing in the lawsuit to interpret their contract with ADOR is set for June 5, 2025.
NewJeans’ decision to appeal the Circuit Court’s injunction ruling at a High Court has set the stage for an intense legal battle between themselves and ADOR. Stay tuned for more updates.
