Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl LIX halftime show did not go unnoticed since the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is said to have received 125 complaints regarding the show, as reported by TMZ. A few of the reasons are inappropriate lyrics, erotic dancing, and anti-American overtones.

Among the grievances was Lamar's performance of "Not Like Us," where instead of calling the Canadian rapper a "certified p***ophile" like he did in his song, Lamar said, "Say, Drake, I hear you like 'em young" and "Tryna strike a chord, and it's probably A minor." Although some of the critics complained about the creative decision made at performance time, there is no regulatory move as yet for this incident.

The show, which was held at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, had an energetic setlist and highlighted collaborations. Lamar co-headlined with SZA and DJ Mustard, and the show had elaborate choreography and beautiful visuals. It was one of the most-watched halftime shows of all time despite the controversial public reaction and backlash against some parts of the performance.

Highlights of the performance: setlist and collaborations

The performance by Lamar featured a set of chart-topping hits like DNA, Euphoria, and Humble. The stage show was visually rich, with extensive choreography and robust thematic content. SZA and DJ Mustard performed with him on stage, adding to the total musical value.

Samuel L. Jackson unexpectedly appeared as "Uncle Sam" at the Super Bowl LIX halftime show on February 9, 2025, and emceed Kendrick Lamar's performance.

As stated by Forbes and ABC News, Serena Williams also appeared on the show. She reportedly joined in for a dance number and was seen doing the Crip Walk. Her appearance contributed to an air of surprise about the performance, even though her participation was minimal. The star-studded halftime show garnered widespread praise for its unexpected guest appearances and energetic performances.

FCC complaints and controversy

TMZ's reports stated that the FCC had 125 complaints about Lamar's halftime performance, complaining about lyrical content and thematic issues. Traditionally, Super Bowl halftime shows have sometimes attracted viewer criticism, but regulatory examination is a standard part of big broadcast events, and no official action has been taken concerning this show.

Kendrick's use of the platform to target his bitter rival Drake in particular infuriated some people. Many others thought the event was unsuitable for families. The split American flag image that appeared in the show upset a number of people. Additionally, Serena Williams received criticism for her involvement and for encouraging "gang affiliation" through her dancing move.

Public reception and media coverage

Lamar's performance was met with mixed reviews. Forbes states that most fans and industry experts commended his stage presence, choreography, and artistry. Some viewers questioned whether the material was appropriate for a wide Super Bowl audience, which consists of families and younger viewers.

Social media posts were a mixed reaction, with fans praising Lamar's cultural impact and performance value, while critics complained about some of the themes. Most agreed that Lamar's performance was visually impressive and musically strong and one of the most discussed halftime performances in recent history.

Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl LIX halftime show was a giant entertainment event, which received equal parts praise and criticism. Just like with most major acts, there were divided opinions, but Lamar's artistic talent and presence in the music industry are still universally accepted.
