Music critic and Internet personality Anthony Fantano appeared as a guest on the NFR podcast to talk about the top 10 rap discographies. In the video uploaded on YouTube on March 25, 2025, Fantano speaks to Luca Guerini and Anthony D'Aliesio about his list of rap discographies.
Anthony Fantano talked about his favorite artists and revealed the list as: (10) Public Enemy, (9) Jay-Z, (8) Dr Dre, (7) Kanye West, (6) The Roots, (5) Ghost Face Killer, (4 )Kendrick Lamar, (3) Outcast, (2) MF Doom, (1) and 50 Cent.
Luca and D'Aliesio were shocked at Kanye's position and stated, "That is low." Fantano explained his rationale for Kanye's placement at number 7 and noted,
"It's me balancing like the ratio of classic albums to the bad ones and I know that classic albums, I know he has many."
He added that he looks at the "quality" and "significance" of the albums. NFR podcast posted a clip of their discussion on their X channel and asked their followers' thoughts on Ye being placed "at #7."
Fans had mixed reactions to the ranking, with many expressing their disappointment. One user (@seewhyChels) disagreed with Anthony Fantano and noted,
"Can’t take him serious. No rapper has more classics than Ye."
Another user (@WiZiCFC) chimed their disagreement with Anthony's ranking and explained,
"He's always been an super political reviewer and it ruins his actual credibility as a reviewer of music so much."
One fan (@bowlcutbabytron) wrote in Kanye West's support and wrote,
"How anyone can realistically have Kanye lower than 3 is mind blowing to me. You can’t deny his impact on rap and music as a whole and he has elite classic records."
Another user (@Gobucks5240) appeared to agree with Anthony's ranking and noted that Kanye's music is not the same anymore. They added,
"His old stuff, yes. It's been a decade since he's had a good album. Sprinkles of greatness here and there, but it's just not the same."
One netizen appeared concerned about the comment section and wrote,
"Damn why are these comments so hostile? He still made the top 10???"
Fantano places Kanye West at #7 on his list of top 10 rap discographies
In the podcast, Anthony expected that many people would disagree with his ranking, especially that of Kanye's. It appears that Anthony hasn't been a fan of Ye's work in recent years. In February 2024, Anthony put out Kanye's Vultures 1 review on his YouTube channel, The Needle Drop, and described it as "unreviewable trash". Additionally, the music critic had posted a blog titled, 'The Kanye Fallout' on his website.
During his conversation on the NFR podcast, Anthony contended that Kanye would probably be placed lower due to his "recent albums." However, he added that he recognizes that Ye's albums have had "a massive impact and a lot of people still love them."
He elaborated on his appreciation for the rapper and noted,
"They have a little bit for everybody in their catalog, no two or three albums sound the same."
He noted that preferences can differ, and for him, Ye is not his "personal favourite," and yet he appreciates his "variety and the evolution."
Anthony Fantano's subjective list is based on his experience and liking. Fans expressed their disappointment and noted that he should have at least been in the top five. Others agreed with Anthony's ranking and noted that there has been a shift in Kanye's work over the years.
