In lieu of traditional promotion, Lorde texted several of her fans to “meet me in the park” at 7 pm. Many fans flocked to the arena, though they were soon pushed out by officials.
The singer then took to her Instagram Stories to pen an apology for her fans, noting:
“Omg @thepark the cops are shutting us down. I am truly Amazed by how many of you showed up !!!” she wrote. “But they’re telling me you gotta disperse … I’m so sorry.”
Speaking with the Rolling Stone, a spokesperson for New York City’s DCPI revealed that officers were notified about an “unscheduled event” within the park, adding that a “sound and parks permit” is mandatory to hold a concert there.
“This individual did not possess either,” the statement added. “Organizers of the event were informed they could not perform and they left the location.”
Nonetheless, the singer showed up to play the new single for her fans, though she didn't perform it live. She did, however, dance along to it while its producer, Dev Hynes of Blood Orange, played it on speakers.
The singer's appearance in NYC comes on the heels of her performance alongside Charli XCX during the latter's set. For her surprise performance, she performed Girl, So Confusing.
