The legal dispute between the Nokia singer and UMG (Universal Music Group) has heightened as Drake has responded to UMG's fiery retort. Earlier, UMG responded to Drake's amended complaint, stating that it was baseless and an attack on an artist's freedom.
This comes after Drake filed an amended complaint that alleged the UMG sided with Kendrick by releasing the diss track Not Like Us that falsely calls Drake a 'pedophile.' He also mentioned the particular word being censored at the Super Bowl halftime show and how the song is damaging to his reputation.
Now Drake has responded, saying that UMG is trying to spin the narrative, and they ended the statement by saying:
''Drake knows exactly what he asked for: the truth and accountability.''
Drake responds to UMG's statement in defamation lawsuit
On April 18, 2025, Drake issued a response to the earlier statement released by UMG. A representative from Drake's team said that the UMG is trying to change the narrative of the lawsuit and deflect it from the truth.
They then mentioned that the UMG is doing that because Drake has held one of the world's biggest music giants responsible for damaging his reputation by allowing Kendrick to release the diss track Not Like Us, which falsely claimed Drake was a pedophile, along with other insults.
The statement also addressed the dropping of the lawsuit in Texas. They said that it was done because the lawsuit will be proceeding in New York, where the discovery motion will take place. They also pointed out that UGM dropped their case in Texas because their case wasn't strong, highlighting that it's UGM's loss and not Drake's.
They then mentioned that Drake has no issues with the discovery motion. The statement reads:
''Drake welcomes discovery and has nothing to hide. It’s not Drake who should worry; it’s UMG’s current leadership. We look forward to hearing from Lucian Grainge, John Janick, and UMG employees under oath.''
The response from Drake then called out UGM for taking advantage of artists, using them for profit, and then abandoning them. They also mentioned how UGM only pretends to support artists and their creativity. It mentions how other artists are also calling out UGM for their operations and leadership. The statement also demanded honesty and openness from UGM.
Lastly, the statement concludes by responding to the 'be careful what you ask for' phrase that UGM had in their response to the amended complaint. The response from the statement read:
''UMG said, ‘be careful what you ask for,’ Drake knows exactly what he asked for: the truth and accountability.''
The amended complaint added to the defamation lawsuit that was filed in January against UMG. In a statement to Variety, Drake's attorney, Michael Gottlieb, said this regarding the amended complaint:
''Drake’s amended complaint makes an already strong case stronger. UMG’s PR ‘spin’ and failed efforts to avoid discovery cannot suppress the facts and the truth. With discovery now moving forward, Drake will expose the evidence of UMG’s misconduct, and UMG will be held accountable for the consequences of its ill-conceived decisions.''
In March 2025, UGM filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit, and the hearing of the same is scheduled for June 30, 2025, and as of yet, UGM has not responded to Drake's statement.
